GRASPING AT STRAWS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must hurry and write these here notes because I have a busy, busy, busy (that is three busys) day. Besides, I have the feeling that there are a few dear readers who might want to catch up on the weekend notes, so there’s plenty to read.

Last night I watched a fine French film entitled Bob Le Flambeur (Bob the Gambler). It’s an odd film and it kind of led the way for the French New Wave. It’s directed by Jean Pierre Melville who has a fine standing with auterists everywhere. Anyway, it’s quite enjoyable – I like mostly any film about gambling and people named Bob – sort of a non-heist heist film. The actors are all excellent as is the score by Eddie Barclay and the wonderful camerawork of one of my all-time faves, Henri Decae. The DVD is from Criterion and I recommend it to those who like French auteurs, interesting mise en scene, characters named Bob, gambling, subtitles and the like.

I also finished watching Robin and Marian and I must say, while it’s not perfect, I really do like it a lot. I remember seeing it back in 1976 – Miss Audrey Hepburn hadn’t made a film in nine years. I sat there and thought, wow she looks pretty good for someone that old. My, that was a rather ignorant thing to think, wasn’t it, since she was all of forty-eight. Since I am now all of fifty-four, forty-eight seems nice and young. There is wonderful dialogue throughout the film, and Sean Connery, Nicol Williamson and Robert Shaw are just grand. And Miss Audrey Hepburn is beyond grand – she is in a whole different world; beautiful, graceful, funny, touching and unique.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? By the way (BTW, in Internet lingo), apparently Donald has an excellent new radio show up today – a tribute to Dolores Gray, so be sure to tune in. We are, I’m afraid, going to have to bitch-slap Donald because he never posts what these shows are. Yes, Virginia, Mr. Donald Feltham has been errant and truant (not necessarily in that order) and that is simply not acceptable. That is simply not done (TISND, in Internet lingo).

Oh, let us stop all this idle chit-chat and also chat-chit, and click on the Unseemly Button below. In case you were wondering, I will never ask for your username and password. Click way, my pretties.

Seriously, if you were on vacation or off doing amusing things and were too busy for the likes of us, do catch up on what you missed, especially the notes entitled The Scam. Simply use our handy-dandy Unseemly Archive Button.

Last night I received one of the nicest e-mails ever – a wonderful fan letter from someone who loves Nudie Musical. I’ve asked the author of it for permission to share it with all you dear readers, but I haven’t heard back yet. Nor have I heard front, for that or any other matter. In any case, it was quite touching and very heartfelt and it made my day.

If you’ve been holding off (and if you have, have you also been holding on? Why should off be held and not on – that’s not very sporting, is it?) purchasing Benjamin Kritzer, I’m just giving a little head’s up that I am just about out of the little gift CD which accompanies purchases made on this here site – and I am most likely not going to repress it.

I don’t know why, but writing these here notes today has been like pulling teeth. Today is one of those days where I apparently am grasping at straws. Have you ever grasped at straws? It’s quite a bit of fun and I recommend it. And after you’ve grasped at them, you can use them to drink your various and sundried liquid refreshments.

Oh, well, let’s just think of today’s notes as a footnote in the scheme of these here notes. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, today’s notes are but a mere footnote in the scheme of these here notes. Not a handnote, mind you, or even a nosenote, no today’s notes are a footnote in the scheme of these here notes. There isn’t even any irony in today’s footnotes and mustn’t we have some irony? Along with some B-12? Does anyone have a clue as to what the hell I’m talking about?

Has anyone noticed that I am grasping at straws? I do hope all of our Hainsies/Kimlets are back today because we missed you over the weekend. As for the likes of me, I will return tomorrow, when I will not be grasping at straws, when the notes will not be a footnote in the scheme of these here notes, when the notes will have pith and irony and B-12. Oh, I feel tomorrow’s notes will be the berries. In fact, I should have written tomorrow’s notes today, then I would not have been grasping at straws. Today’s topic of discussion: Everyone give me your usernames and passwords. Only kidding. Since I was almost involved in a scam this weekend, have you ever been taken in by a scam, and if so what was it and what did you do about it when you found out? Post away, my pretties.
