KNOCK KNOCK KNOCKIN’ AT OUR COLLECTIVE DOORS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here it is, Friday, the last day of January. Can you believe it? A whole month has already gone by and tomorrow it will be February. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too? New dog Molly will be coming over later today to spend the weekend – a trial visit for both of us. I shall have a full report for you, of course.

Yesterday, I spent the entire day sitting at the computer, editing the book. This is arduous work – I’ve had three people proofing and making suggestions, and each one of them finds different things. One has to decide which are viable and which aren’t – I find that sometimes I forego punctuation problems if it hurts the flow of things. I also find that I’ve done certain things stylistically and, even though they might not be exactly correct, grammar-wise, I leave them, because I think some of these rules were made to be broken, if one is consistent. After all, Mr. Samuel Becket once wrote a book entitled What It Is, which has no punctuation at all. For example, if you want a certain sentence to sound breathless or excited, putting too many commas or even, heaven-forbid, a semi-colon, absolutely stops the flow of it – literally stops your eye along the way. For those types of sentences, less is more, punctuation-wise. What’s also amazing (as it was with the first book) is how many little spelling mistakes you catch every time you go through the book – and again, everyone catches different ones, which I find fascinating. Doing these fixes yesterday, even I caught three that everyone had missed. But, we’re getting through it and we shall hopefully be done by the end of next week and off it will go to the publisher. Then, after I receive the galley, we get to do the whole process over again.

I have been enjoying your movie picks tremendously. Yesterday, I began posting some of mine and will catch up to you very soon. Well, dear readers, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because, after all, we cannot tarry as February is knock-knock-knockin’ at our collective doors.

When you pronounce February do you include that first “r”? “Febrooary”? I feel, since someone had the bad taste to insert that useless “r” in there, that we must all pronounce it – so, for the entire month of “Febrooary” all Hainsies/Kimlets must pronounce it the way it is written. That will confound and annoy everyone and they will look at you askance, oh, yes, they will look at you askance, and you will look right back and say to them, “Oh, yeah? Is there or is there not an “r” after the “b” in “February”? Yes or no”? And those self-same smug individuals will have to answer “Yes” and then we will laugh and laugh and feel superior just like the lake. We will laugh and laugh and then go on our merry way, saying, “Have a happy “Febrooary” you misbegotten ort.” What the hell am I talking about?

Well, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must keep these notes short because a) yesterday’s were endless and, b) Febrooary is knock-knock-knockin’ at our collective doors. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is in your CD player and your DVD/video player. I’ll start – nothing. I haven’t had time to watch or listen to anything since returning from New York, New York, so I will be very interested to see what you are listening to and watching. I’ll be back in a bit to check on your excellent posts and I’ll let you know when new dog Molly arrives. Post away, my pretties. Let’s send January out with a bang.
