THE HAPPY NEW YEAR NOTES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here it is, the first day of a brand spanking New Year – 2003. I trust you are all safe and sound and feeling in fine fettle this fine morning. We had a lovely rockin’ New Year’s Eve party right here, with posts galore and it was a nice way to send last year to the showers. It’s a beautiful crisp day here in Los Angeles, California. I might not write anything today, just relax and read my book from cover-to-cover. Or, I might just try to slog through some pages just for the sheer slogging of it. One simply cannot have enough slogging on New Year’s Day. When I was but a wee sprig of a twig of a lad of a youth I would always watch the Rose Bowl Parade. I haven’t watched a Rose Bowl Parade in at least twenty years. Other than not watching the Rose Bowl Parade I shall remain warm and cozy (not necessarily in that order) in my very own home.

Yesterday, I ended up doing the entire opening of Act Two for Nudie Musical, and took it right up to the Stunt C#*k scene, which is where I will pick up. Isn’t that a fine place to pick up, the Stunt C#*k scene? Do you like that I used #* in the middle of the second word? I’m very sensitive and I know that some of our dear readers are young and might be offended by the use of the word “cork”. I finished the lyrics to a somewhat complicated trio for Rosie, Harry and Mary yesterday as well. And there’s a brand spanking new musical production number for the Stunt Cork scene – oops, I’m sorry, Stunt C#*k. It’s a huge number befitting its subject and star. In fact, it’s the one song I wrote years ago when we were thinking of doing the sequel to Nudie – although, I’d only written the first part of it and not the main refrain. One simply must have a main refrain or one is simply not with it. I do hope the number will be properly offensive yet innocent to one and all and also all and one.

Structurally, it’s interesting to be able to take two scenes from the film that basically cover the same territory and be able to consolidate them into one much stronger scene with song. Approaching the upcoming scene I have realized that one character, Eunice, the script girl, needs some material in Act One, if she’s to retain her song for Act Two. I need to beef her up a bit – but one can usually do that by inserting a few choice lines here and there. In any case, I hope to be finished with it by the end of the week and then I shall have some actor friends (either here or in New York – or maybe both) get together and read it for me – no audience, really, just some friends, so I can hear it out loud and see how it flows and if the new material is integrated well.

Say, I’ve got an idea. Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below? We haven’t done that once this year and I think it’s high time we do, don’t you?

I was about to start typing when instead my mind went elsewhere and now it is ten minutes later. This is called a Lapse of Time (LOT, in Internet lingo). I had a LOT and now I’m dazed and confused and I know not what I am writing. However, that’s never stopped me before so I will carry on, I will mush on, I will move on – oh, a Sondheim reference. Yes, merrily we roll along – oh, another Sondheim reference, and I will type, type, type (that is three types – why can’t I settle on one type – I’m so indecisive this morning) until the cows come home.

Perhaps I should watch the Rose Bowl Parade. After all, it’s been twenty years. Perhaps not. After all, I could simply get my own bowl, put a rose in it and have my own parade right here with Luckie, who would make a fine float.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, whatever they may be, and I must, most importantly, decide on what foodstuffs I will be stuffing down my gaping hungry maw later today. I want to put some more #* in words, I like the way it looks. For example, l#*ks. Isn’t that too too? Or, instead of “that” we’ll do “t#*t” – hmmm, maybe not. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s the first day of the New Year which happens to coincide with Ask BK Day, so just ask your excellent questions, the ones you’ve always wanted to ask but which have slipped your mind. Ask away, dear readers, and I will be checking in often, and do feel free to discuss whatever else you feel like, too.
