March 22, 2003:

BEING SKEEVED

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, this weekend we start working on the arrangements for the new CD I mentioned the other day, and then on Monday I shall begin casting it. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too? I must be brief in today’s notes because guess who will arrive at any moment and begin giving me the Evil Eye? Yes, Virginia, the cleaning lady will arrive and I must not be here for long thereafter.

When did it change, dear readers? When did the news media become what it is today? It wasn’t always like that, it wasn’t always a “show”, complete with dramatic title cards and musical score. It wasn’t filled with overacting anchors and the breathless pacing of an MTV video. It skeeves me, frankly, and I will not view it anymore. That was a little Saturday Morning Rant, brought to you by haineshisway.com Cheese Slices and Ham Chunks.

I spent a good deal of time on the phone yesterday with Dell, trying to fix that little freeze problem I’ve mentioned before. The one where my computer simply freezes and everything begins to fragment and the only way out is to use the power button to shut down. This makes me very nervous, but the man we spoke to yesterday assured me by doing what we did (updating BIOS and the video driver) that it would never happen again. We shall see what we shall see. Was that another Saturday Morning Rant? I know not.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below before the cleaning lady and her Evil Eye arrive, because frankly if she gives me the Evil Eye it will skeeve me.

Uh oh. Uh oh. Uh oh (that is three Uh Ohs), I hear a car door closing outside and I do believe that signals the arrival of the cleaning lady. It occurs to me that she would not be out of place in a Val Lewton horror movie, such as The Curse of the Cleaning Lady.

Have I mentioned that I do not like the news media and that they skeeve me? Oh, yes, they skeeve me and there are no two ways about it – in fact, there are no three ways about it either. Has anyone noticed that quite a few things are skeeving me these days? But I go on. On I go. Go I on.

There is a fellow, one of those obnoxious idiots, on one of the newsgroups I occasionally peruse, who keeps using the word “obfuscate”. May I just say that the word “obfuscate” and the fellow who’s using it skeeve me? Who would use such a word? Who would even invent such a word, and yet someone did, probably to obfuscate something or other. Damn them, damn them all to hell.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must leave my house and not return until two o’clock or I will skeeve the cleaning lady. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your pet skeeves – what skeeves you the most? And, of course, do feel free to discuss the news media if they happen to be your pet skeeve. I’ll check back after two o’clock Pacific Mean Time. Meantime, post away, my pretties, for if you don’t you shall skeeve me.
