March 31, 2003:

THE ATTACK OF THE ALLERGIES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here it is, the last of March. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, it is time to send March marching and time to let April have its day. It’s also apparently become allergy season because I’ve had several allergy attacks in the last few days, including one in the middle of the night last night. I was attacked by an allergy, but I took a pill and won the allergy attack, I put the allergy attack in its place, I clobbered the allergy attack.

Yesterday, I attended the little paperback show and saw lots of people I know and had fun perusing, although I made no purchases. The neatest thing that happened happened when I first arrived. I was looking around, going up and down the aisles of dealers. Suddenly this fellow was staring at me, then he started to smile, then he came directly up to me and said, quite loudly, “I know who you are.” I said, “You do?” and he told me he loved my movies, and that he’d just finished listening to all three count them three commentary tracks on Nudie Musical. He went on and on about it and it made me feel quite good. He then introduced himself – Max Allen Collins, the author of the graphic novel, Road to Perdition, as well as many other things, including several films. Isn’t that a lovely story? It actually made my day.

Well, on this last day of March it is time to put on our pointy party hats, time to don our colored tights and pantaloons, time to break out the cheese slices and ham chunks, time to dance the Hora or even the Wah-Watusi. And why is it time to do these things? Well, I’ll tell you why, because why should I withhold such things from you? We have a birthday to celebrate, that’s why. Our very own Ann turns twenty-two on this very day, the last of March. So, let us all party until the cows come home and wish her a very special haineshisway.com birthday greeting. On the count of three: One, two, three – A VERY SPECIAL BIRTHDAY GREETING, ANN!

Say, I have an idea. Why don’t we click on the Unseemly Button below so we can begin the festivities? Isn’t that a sparkling idea?

My goodness, the festivities have begun. If you missed any of the lively and sparkling goings-on over the weekend, you really must use the Unseemly Archive Button to catch up. Many interesting facts were revealed, and we, of course, had a lively and sparkling Live Chat last night, with a full room of guests. We are also having a celebrity chat this Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Pacific Mean Time, with our very own Alison Fraser. I do hope you’ll all be able to be there, and be sure to tell your friends and neighbors as well, as Ms. Fraser is delightful and fun.

Last night I watched the film Ringu, the original Japanese version of what became The Ring. This is one of those films one hears about – “The scariest movie ever”. The same kind of thing one heard about The Blair Witch Project, which was about as scary as eating a donut. Ringu has an interesting Twilight Zone-ish kind of plot, and it has some creepy images, but it’s hardly the scariest movie ever, nor do I think it wants to be. It’s a minor film, but it does create a certain atmosphere. The trailer for the American version is included, and it looks dreadful – full of the over-hyped loud crass “thriller” elements I’ve come to revile in American films. What else is new?

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must send the final fixes in for my book, I must do many errands and whatnot and then, of course, I must party until the cows come home in celebration of our very own Ann’s birthday. Today’s topic of discussion: Since we’re celebrating a birthday – if you could have any cake or dessert of your choice on this very day, what would it be? We’ve done desserts before but never been this specific. We want all the details, we want mouth-watering descriptions. We want to pig out. I’ll check back in a bit, so, post away, my pretties.
