THE BASH TO END THEM ALL

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it was the bash to end them all. Even though I didn’t see the Oscars it was as if I was there, and I have never had more fun with the Oscars than I did here at haineshisway.com last night. If you were errant and truant you might just want to check out yesterday’s notes for our record number of posts – over 350! Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, over 350 posts in one day. I thought the awards were parceled out pretty evenly, even though I was annoyed by a few (Frida, instead of Far From Heaven or Catch Me if you Can) – however, nothing could have pleased me more than the wins of Mr. Adrien Brody and Mr. Roman Polanski for The Pianist. I’ve read on several boards that Rob was robbed – tain’t true, McGee. While Mr. Marshall did a fine job, Mr. Polanski, in my opinion, was the year’s finest director and his film is artful and beautiful. In any case, Rob is a winner because Chicago was voted Best Film and since it is his film he wins.

I’m going to keep today’s notes short because I’ve got a lot to do today and I must get cracking. Besides, if you missed the weekend notes, you’ve got a lot of reading to catch up on.

I’m going to order my digital cable this week – does anyone have any thoughts between the DishNetwork and DirectTV? I can’t imagine there’s much difference, although with DishNetwork they come out for free, the equipment ends up being free (they credit you for your first bill) – I’m just not sure about the channels and the perks.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get cracking.

Have I mentioned that I must get cracking. I must crack my knuckles, I must crack my toes, east of java, I must crack my back and all other crackable joints. Speaking of joints, was there any joint that was jumpin’ more than this joint was jumpin’ last night? I would doubt it. Doubt it I would. Would doubt it I.

I watched several DVDs over the weekend, none of them really worth writing about – all B movies and weird little horror things, like Circus of Horrors and Mr. Sardonicus. I’ll be picking up the new Criterion Straw Dogs today, and hopefully Day for Night as well.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must get cracking, I must crack all the livelong day and night, I must eat various and sundried foodstuffs and I must write and drive and call and converse. Today’s topic of discussion: Have you ever seen a musical where a supporting performer in a small role was so electrifying that they almost walked away with the show? If so, who and what show? I’ll start – Gene Castle in George M! Mr. Castle was what was called a “featured” dancer – he had an incredible solo turn in one number and from that number on I could not take my eyes off him. He was brilliant. I later worked with him when I hired him to choreograph a children’s video I directed for Hanna-Barbera, and I told him that story and he was very pleased.
Also, Donna McKechnie in Promises, Promises. Your turn.
