THE FORMATIVE STAGES

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I’m hoping that today will be a lovely day – I should know by three-thirty or so. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too? I did have a lovely luscious lunch (that is three “l”s for the price of one) yesterday, with that very good and loud singer, Joan Ryan. I believe we’ll be doing an album together very soon, but it’s still in the very formative stages. I will, of course, keep you posted as it leaves the formative stages. One simply cannot stay in the formative stages forever, oh, no, one simply cannot.

I feel that thus far these here notes are in their formative stages, don’t you? I don’t think these here notes have found their sea legs, do you? I believe these here notes are sans sea legs, don’t you? What do you do when you see sea legs? Do you say, si si when you see sea legs? What the hell am I talking about?

You know, it’s occurred to me that these here notes are in their formative stages and haven’t yet found their sea legs. I believe that these here notes haven’t found their way to where they’re going. I believe the ultimate destination these are notes are heading to remains undetermined at this time. I believe with every drop of rain that falls, a flower grows. I believe if we climb ev’ry mountain and ford or, at the very least, chevrolet ev’ry stream that we will never walk alone. I believa in miracles. What am I, Kathryn Kuhlman all of a sudden?

Has anyone noticed these here notes are still in their formative stages? Perhaps if we all click on the Unseemly Button below these notes will finally ease on down the road.

Last night I watched the new DVD of the motion picture entertainment entitled Cover Girl, starring Miss Rita Hayworth and Mr. Gene Kelly. I’ve never seen it before (just bits) but I really enjoyed it despite its not having a great script. Phil Silvers is always a pleasure to see, even with hair. And there weren’t many comediennes better than Eve Arden. One of the best things was a song I rather shamefacedly admit that I didn’t know – Sure Thing. This has instantly entered the pantheon of my favorite songs – with its insinuatingly hummable tune by Jerome Kern and it’s terrific lyric by Ira Gershwin. And, of course, this film features one of the great songs of all time in anyone’s pantheon, Long Ago and Far Away. I don’t think there were/are many composers as varied and brilliant as Mr. Kern – he’s the berries.

I do believe these here notes are finally out of their formative stages. I believe these here notes have found their sea legs or, at the very least, their crab legs with butter. I believe these here notes are easin’ down the road on their way to their final destination. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must sing Sure Thing all the livelong day, much to the chagrin of my co-workers. Did you know my co-workers had chagrin? They also have shipoopi. Today’s topic of discussion: Since I’m on my Jerome Kern Kick, let’s do our favorite Kern songs (we’ve done it before, but not for a long time and we have all these delicious and bright new dear readers). I’ll start – Pick Yourself Up, Never Gonna Dance, Sure Thing, All the Things You Are, Look for the Silver Lining, Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man of Mine and tons of others. I leave it to you, dear readers, to fill in the blanks.
