July 31, 2004:

THE MEDIUM IS THE MASSAGE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, we had a nice rehearsal last night – everyone adjusted to the theater much better than the previous frustrating night, and everyone was in much better spirits. We ran the show from start to finish – stopping a few times to clean up moments, but I’m starting to see a show, which is good. It’s becoming apparent what works well from number to number, and what’s going to need transitional material, which I’m going to have to come up with this weekend. I still haven’t gotten to the finale, but it’s only two new verses to the opening number music, so I should be able to finish it this weekend. We came up with another couple of funny bits tonight, and I fixed the staging of one of the three numbers I was unhappy with, and it’s much better now. Prior to rehearsal, Tammy had asked me to go along with her to a TV interview at Adelphia Cable in Santa Monica. Unfortunately, it was a really bad idea to schedule this interview on a Friday afternoon at three-thirty. First off, Tammy had to be back in Hollywood by six, so she’d already told them she had to be out the door by five. We left at two and at three forty-five we finally got off the San Diego Freeway at Wilshire. They were holding the taping, but the streets were as crowded as the freeway and at four ten we just gave up and called and cancelled. What a waste of two hours. We actually got to the theater in twenty minutes. The set is up, but still has to be covered in duvetyn, and the little trick things in it still have to be installed. But it looks good and is going to work very well indeed. We’re deciding whether to have mics for the show – not head mics, which are way too expensive for us, but floor mics and two overheads. I’m just not thrilled with the natural sound of the theater, and it’s occasionally hard to hear a couple of the numbers. We shall see. I’m very pleased with our lighting designer, who’s very on top of things and sees exactly what I want to do. The cast was much more into things tonight, and some of the numbers are really getting good and getting tight. I, myself, am getting tight, too. My neck, for example. My neck, for example, is so sore I can barely sit in my chair and type. I need an excellent massage is what I need. The massage is the message. The message is the massage. The medium in the message, but is the message the medium? And why is it always the medium – why isn’t it sometimes the small or the large or the extra large? What am I, Marshall McLuhan all of a sudden? Am I really still in the first paragraph? This is the War and Peace of paragraphs, for example.

Whew, I thought that paragraph was going to go on forever. Luckily, this new paragraph came along and saved the day. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because the small, medium and large is the message and the message is the massage.

I had to postpone my haircut until next Thursday. Now, where on all the Internet can you find such information? Nowhere, that’s where. I tell you, the medium is the message here at haineshisway.com. And the medium is the massage and I wish the massage were happening right this very moment.

Don’t forget, Donald will have a new radio show up tomorrow afternoon and I’m quite certain it will be a doozy, oh, yes, I’m quite certain it will be a doozy. Does “doozy” look right? Should it have an “e” in it? I know not, I care not, because “doozy”, no matter which way you spell it, is a stupid word that is not worth worrying about. Also, I suppose we can attempt to have an Unseemly Live Chat tomorrow night in our Unseemly Live Chat Room – at six o’clock Pacific Mean Daylight Savings Time. I’ll be a bit late, but I’ll be there with bells on.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must rehearse and write and stage and restage. I must direct performances and I must keep my eye on the whole. And do remember – the medium is the message, baby. Today’s topic of discussion: What do you think of all these “self-help” gurus like Tony Robbins? All these people who have the answers as to how to change your life and turn it into a rip-roaring success. Tell us about the ones you know about, and tell us if you’ve actually gone to any of the seminars. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we? We shall.
