THE UNSEEMLY HUM

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I never did get around to hanging pictures yesterday. Instead, I unboxed more CDs, more books, had some shelves built in one of the closets, did a lot of organizing and generally got a lot done, new home environment-wise. Still lots to do, but really, there’s only six more CD boxes to go and once that’s done then I just have to go room-to-room and pick up what’s lying about and find places for it. The pool man may or may not be coming tomorrow, but if he isn’t he will be called and told to get here. My Handy Man took a look at the pool works and said the filter is probably bad and needs to be replaced (not a big deal) – I saw where all the controls are for heating both pool and Jacuzzi, so hopefully once he replaces the filter and shows me exactly how to work it, that will be one thing less that I need to know. At some point in the next week, the Handy Man of the owners will come over and show me how to work and program the automatic outdoor lights. They will also finally bring me the garage door opener. I’m really enjoying this house – it’s extremely peaceful and extremely quiet at night – just the crickets and me. My Wiring Man will be here this afternoon to install one cord that he didn’t have with him last time, and hopefully he’ll be able to quickly fix the unseemly hum that the Direct TV people seem to have introduced into my system. They moved a couple of pieces of equipment to get the wire to the TIVO unit and something probably came loose. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

I got a new DVD from France – a new edition of Buster Keaton’s masterpiece, The General. I have the Image edition, but this one makes that one look like it was a transfer from VHS – all the home video versions I’ve seen heretofore have had a sepia tint to the whole movie – not this one. It’s gorgeous black-and-white from start to finish. It has astonishing clarity and it features the same Robert Israel score that most home vid versions have – but, here’s the best news – it also features a brand new score in 5.1 by Joe Hisaishi, the brilliant composer of all the Miyazaki animes like Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, etc. I watched a bit of it and I could not believe my eyes and ears – the score is wonderful and the image is breathtaking. As soon as the unseemly hum disappears I shall watch it in its entirety. In the same order, I also got Mr. Godard’s Pierrot Le Fou. Starting tomorrow I shall begin watching DVDs again regularly.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below before these here notes get an unseemly hum.

I’ve been taking long luxurious showers every night before bed and I love it – the hot water lasts forever here (not so at the other house) and while I’d like a bit more water pressure, the way it comes out is almost like a tingly massage and I’ve grown quite fond of it.

Has anyone noticed an unseemly hum around these here parts? I hate unseemly hums, don’t you? Unseemly hums bug my butt cheeks. I can’t wait to use both pool and Jacuzzi and hope that Mr. Pool Man will come today and can fix what needs to be fixed. I still have to buy me a bathing outfit – no Speedos for me, however. I must also buy some patio furniture now that I have a beautiful patio – and some lounging chairs for some lounging. One fine day I shall see if I can operate the large gas barbecue out there. I can barbecue wieners and whatnot.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must do some errands before Mr. Wiring Man shows up and then I must get back on track, writing-wise, and then I must unbox the last of the CDs and hopefully they will all fit handily. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers as we try not to be bothered by any unseemly hums.
