CATCHING UP

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the weekend is over and the week has begun, not necessarily in that order. Yesterday, I spent a very relaxing day – caught up on my writing (what up was doing on my writing I have no idea, but I caught up and booted up right off my writing), took a long walk, ate a variety and also a hollywood reporter of foodstuffs, and lounged around in my lounging pyjamas and smoking jacket and, of course, my dickie. I was expecting something very important today but found out it won’t be arriving until tomorrow. I find that most annoying and I will be calling UPS to complain bitterly about it. The thing I’m expecting was supposed to arrive this very day, but UPS sent it to the wrong station (in Vernon, CA, wherever the hell that is), so they had to send it to the correct station which delays things one day. I’m going to be relentless with them, however, and see if they can’t somehow get it on a truck and delivered by the end of the business day. If not, then it will be tomorrow. The ineptitude of these people is frightening and it’s a wonder anything gets delivered correctly. I shall keep you apprised of my relentless phone call to UPS. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Last night I just couldn’t get motivated to watch a DVD, so instead I watched a movie I’d TIVOd months ago, a movie I somehow had never caught up with. The reason I’d never caught up with this movie is because I’d caught up with my writing. Apparently up likes my writing more than this movie. Where was I? Oh, yes, I watched a motion picture entitled The Night of the Iguana. I’d just never had much interest in seeing it, even though I liked the cast. Well, I really enjoyed it immensely – it’s well-written (play by Tennessee Williams, adaptation by John Huston and Anthony Veiller), beautifully directed (by Huston), and the cast is grand. It’s quite out there, and quite randy for its time (1964). There is one shot of Richard Burton and Sue Lyon coming ashore after swimming in the ocean in their underwear that is actually mind-boggling, in that anyone allowed it to stay in the film. Mr. Burton is at his best – funny, strange, over-the-top and totally unique. Ava Gardner, not an actress I normally like, is terrific, and Deborah Kerr, as always, is wonderful. Sue Lyon basically plays Lolita II and she is properly vixenish. An actress named Grayson Hall plays Lyon’s guardian and she’s really good – I’ve never heard of her before (she got up for an Oscar for her performance). A moody and excellent score by Benjamin Frankel. The film is not on DVD but hopefully will be soon.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below so I can see if I can catch up on something else.

Don’t forget, Donald should have a new radio show up for your enjoyment. Today I will most likely be placing my order for books, which means I’ll have them in hand in two weeks. As I’ve said, if Mr. Mark Bakalor has the website up by the first, you’ll be able to place your orders then and there, and there won’t be any delay in the books getting shipped.

This is the last week to enjoy Daylight Savings Time, for on Saturday we fall back and turn our clocks back one hour. Not only that, we get to celebrate Halloween this week as well. This year I will dress up as a fifty-six year old Jewish person – that will be quite scary. I shall give out candies to all the children who come to my new home environment and knock upon my door. We’ll also have our annual Halloween celebration right here at haineshisway.com.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must write, I must call UPS and be relentless, I must do a few things that need doing and I must catch up and when I do I shall beat the living daylights out of up because, frankly, I’ve had it with up. Today’s topic of discussion: Recommend five obscure movies that you adore and tell us why you adore them. That way, we can all discover new things. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we? Perhaps we’ll even catch up on them.
