OCTOBERFEST

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here we are, a brand spanking new month, October. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, October is upon us. Let us make October one long festival here at haineshisway.com – our very own Octoberfest. We shall be light and gay and prance about in socks and pantaloons all the livelong day and night. We shall be all atwitter and agog at the wonders before us. We shall flit and flutter and fly about like a winged bird singing Old Man River. Yes, Virginia, it is October and we shall have a high old time and fill the month with merriment and mirth and laughter and legs. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Yesterday I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled THX 1138, un film de George Lucas. I found it an interesting failure on its initial release, but I enjoyed it this time around – it’s visually very interesting, has interesting ideas, and has an interesting and arresting score by Lalo Schifrin. Mr. Lucas, as is his wont, has digitally enhanced certain shots, none of which really bothered me, save for a couple of the car chase shots at the end, which I found unnecessary. The transfer looks incredible. There is a second disc with extras, including an interesting documentary about the early days of American Zoetrope. In fact, the whole damn DVD is interesting. I’ve also been trying to watch these Columbo episodes, but I must say I’m not really enjoying them all that much. I always like the first fifteen minutes, where the murder occurs, but the entire last two thirds where Columbo solves a murder we already know everything about really grows tiresome after awhile. But, they do have some excellent guest stars and the Billy Goldenberg scores are top-notch (the original pilot has music by Dave Grusin). The transfers aren’t knocking my socks off, which is a good thing since I need my socks on to prance about in.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below so we can begin our Octoberfest in earnest.

For those who weren’t up late last night, I posted the new book cover, so check it out and let me know what you think. The cover is Grant Geissman’s design and I really like its stark simple layout and look.

I have slowly begun work on the rewrite I’m doing – just trying to get the opening prologue to work and the tone right. Once I get that down, I think the rest will come easier, at least I hope so. I’ll be spending a lot of this weekend making more notes and hopefully running the original film.

Has anyone noticed that it is October, and is anyone feeling as giddy as I? Or should that be as giddy as me? I feel giddy, oh, so giddy, like a biddy I’m giddy and gay, and I piddy any boy who isn’t me today.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must celebrate the beginning of the haineshisway.com Octoberfest, I must drive to and fro and also fro and to, I must write, I must watch a DVD, I must sit in a Jacuzzi, and I must eat various and sundried foodstuffs. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD player? I’ll start – CD, the new Yo Yo Ma plays Ennio Morricone album, which I’m enjoying. I also hope to have the latest Varese Sarabande club releases later today. DVD – Ssssss, a strange little horror movie starring Strother Martin. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we begin our month-long Octoberfest.
