TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY OF THE REST OF THE WEEK

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the long, long weekend is almost over and I, for one, am ready to begin a brand spanking new week. There is quite a bit happening this week – meetings, signings, leaving for New York, New York and whatnot, oh, yes, and whatnot. Yesterday was quite a peculiar day – very drizzly, then extremely cold and windy. I got very antsy in the evening after watching two count them two DVDs, so I took a nice drive in my motor car to Tower in the Oaks of Sherman. Whilst there I spied the daughter of our very own Mr. Grant Geissman, and she looked cute as a button. I found several CDs which I simply had to purchase, including some French import 24 bit remasters of Henry Mancini albums – Hatari, Peter Gunn (which also had More Music from Peter Gunn included as a bonus), Mr. Lucky (which also had Mr. Lucky Goes Latin as a bonus), and Charade. I listened to a bit of Hatari in the motor car and I must say it sounds better than it ever has, so I can now replace all other versions that I own. I also got a new Betty Hutton release on Capitol – the TV soundtrack to Satins and Spurs by Livingston and Evans, and, as bonus tracks, all her Capitol singles. Can’t wait to listen to it and also another Capitol album of Capitol artists doing Bacharach and David. Then I came back home and got all toasty in my warm home environment.

Last night, as I mentioned, I watched two motion picture entertainments on DVD – first, Colossus: The Forbin Project. I’ve never been that crazy about the film, but it is enjoyable on many levels and it does have quite a cult following. I like Mr. Eric Braedon a lot, and Susan Clark is always fun to watch. Plus, it has a wonderful score by the just-deceased Michel Colombier. In any case, it was sort of fun to see it again after all these years. I say “sort of fun” because the DVD is a five-star disaster of non-epic proportions – that is to say that for some reason Universal, in a very uncharacteristic move, decided to release this scope film in a pan-and-scan transfer that is a travesty. They should be ashamed of themselves and it especially makes no sense since other transfers in this new low-price series (Studio Selections) are in their proper ratio and enhanced for widescreen TVs. I then watched a film entitled Cloak and Dagger, starring Henry Thomas and Dabney Coleman (also part of the Studio Selections series, but thankfully in its proper ratio). It’s an enjoyable trifle and has an excellent cast and a good score by Brian May. It’s a little too eighties at times, but it’s better than most of the junk we get now. In fact, I doubt they could make this film in quite the same way, what with children being threatened with having their kneecaps shot off and children also doing some killing. The film is loosely (very loosely) based on a Cornell Woolrich story called The Boy Cried Murder, which was made into an excellent film entitled The Window, with little Bobby Driscoll. Hopefully, that movie will make it to DVD someday.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because today is the first day of the rest of the week.

“Today is the first day of the rest of the week.” That is what we call an instant replay. My goodness that was a profound sentence, wasn’t it? “Today is the first day of the rest of the week.” That just makes you think, doesn’t it? It makes me think, I’ll tell you that. It makes me think, what in hell is he going on about?

Don’t forget, Donald should have a brand spanking new radio show up for your listening pleasure at some point today. And don’t forget that today is the first day of the rest of the week. I tell you the profundity is profound. Or is it the profoundity is profund?

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must do a bit of writing if I’m in the mood, I must flit about like a gazelle eating a fruit chew, I must continue on my crash diet ways, and I must take a drive in my motor car so I can travel about and see the sights. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make the topics and we get to post on them. Now, of late you dear readers have not been pulling your weight? I’ve been pulling my weight, which is why I’m on a crash diet. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely posts because today is the first day of the rest of the week.
