Well, dear readers, the end of 2004 is nigh. Yes, Virginia, the end of 2004 is nigh, as we march inexorably toward our New Year’s Rockin’ Eve partay here at haineshisway.com. When is the last time that the team of Nigh and Inexorably appeared together, that’s what I’d like to know. But, in the meantime, it is still 2004 and there is still plenty happening, oh, yes, there is plenty happening. For example, yesterday plenty happened. My daughter and her husband came to visit and we lunched at Art’s Deli and exchanged gifts and we had a splendidly splendid time. Cousin Alan stopped by to say hello, too. I then puttered about the house like a gazelle in a wind tunnel, and then I trotted off to sup with the Jones’s. I must say, supping with the Jones’s is one of my favorite things. Miss Margaret Jones always cooks the homiest meals, cozy and friendly and yummilicious. Both of their kids were in attendance – Ben, who is now attending UCLA, and the beautiful Sophie. We exchanged gifts first, and then we sat down to our lovely repast of salad, ham, Margaret’s famous Cheesy Potatoes (one of the most addictive dishes I’ve ever eaten), corn bread (the best I’ve ever had, and the mix for it was one of my Christmas gifts, so I’ll be making it myself, very soon), and green beans. It was all excellent and the company, as always, was wonderful. I then came home and watched the rest of the fourth Edgar Wallace movie in box number four, Der Hexer. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?
I won’t bore you with yet another report of one of these Edgar Wallace German krimis, but I am having a blast watching each and every one of them – they’re stylishly directed, and many cast members recur from film to film, albeit always as different characters. It’s also fun to see them in the original German language (with subtitles), rather than the atrocious American dubs (which are also included, for old time sake). The transfers (this box is all 2:35) are faboo – sharp, with terrific black-and-white imagery.
I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking of Cheesy Potatoes. I’m going to get the recipe and make them for my very own self. I’m going to become a Cheesy Potatoholic and I’ll have a Cheesy Potato on my back, and I’ll have to join Cheesy Potatoes Anonymous. I’ve actually known some Cheesy Potatoes in my time, but none of them were like these Cheesy Potatoes. Indescribably yummilicious.

The battle of the PC vs. the Apple Powerbook rages on. I am now consulting with a Mac expert, and he’s looked at all the ones on eBay, and is sending me to a place he uses to purchase from, where they may be able to match the price with all the extras I want. At some point very soon I will make the decision and you will all be the first to know about it.
One of the key issues for me is that my Word documents look exactly the same, and today a friend of my daughter’s was over and she showed me her Apple Powerbook and its Word document and we were able to make it look exactly the same, so that’s one worry gone.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must drive about in my motor car, I must ponder the PC vs. the Mac problem, I must not eat too much food, and I must dream of Cheesy Potatoes. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your personal highlights of 2004? I’ll start – certainly the publication of Kritzer Time, and then the writing and publication of Writer’s Block. Also, as silly as it is, the rewriting of the remake of Horror of Party Beach, which I had a blast doing. I hadn’t done a screenplay in ages, and it was fun going back to that form.
