THE RAIN IN SPAIN

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here we are on a rainy Saturday. Did you know that the rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain? Did you know that the Spain in rain stays plainly on the main? Did you know that the plain in Spain stays mainly on the rain? Or vice versa. Or versa vice. The thing that’s not plain is why we’re talking about Spain. Who cares about the rain in Spain when we’ve got so much fershluganah rain in Los Angeles, California, USA. Frankly, I’ve got rain on the brain and it’s driving me insane. Rain, rain, go away, come again a year from May. It’s raining, it’s pouring, this rain is so boring. Yesterday, it rained from midnight to midnight, with only about an hour respite all day. It’s too darn wet, it’s too darn wet. Yesterday, I had a lovely day, staying inside, writing, and keeping warm and toasty and also toasty and warm. I had a lovely Thai dinner with Miss Tammy Minoff and her friend. They’ve been working on a little movie treatment and I’ve been offering sage advice and also parsley and rosemary advice. I must say that Thai food just doesn’t do it for me. I like it fine, but it just doesn’t excite my palette. I don’t know about you, buy I like to have my palette excited every now and then. It’s exciting to have an excited palette, don’t you know. After dinner, Tammy’s friend went off to do some improv show and we went and had dessert at Stanley’s. That I needed like a hole in the head. I had the deliciously delicious warm Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Pie with ice cream. I can’t remember what Tammy had, but she liked it very much. They then had to wheel me to my car. The bar scene at Stanley’s is always amusing to watch, and I told Tammy that I was going to start hanging out there. I gave her my favorite pick-up line, a line I cannot speak on this family site, and she laughed for about ten minutes – the hostess and waitress thought she was quite insane. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled Night and the City, a film of Jules Dassin, starring Richard Widmark, Gene Tierney (in a small and thankless role), and Googie Withers. It’s not quite as good as Mr. Dassin’s Thieves Highway, made the year before. Night and the City was shot in London, because by that time Mr. Dassin was on his way to the blacklist. It’s a beautifully shot and directed film, but the script is less than great. Mr. Widmark, whom I like very much, is really over-the-top here. Miss Tierney is wasted, Hugh Marlowe is wasted, but Herbert Lom and several Brit supporting cast members are very good. The version presented on the DVD is the American version, scored by Mr. Franz Waxman. There was a separate English version, a bit longer with a few different scenes and some editing differences, and a completely different score by Benjamin Frankel. One of the extras on the disc presents several of the different scenes, and contrasts both scores. Unfortunately, the commentary by Christopher Husted, while informative, sounds pedantic, and Mr. Husted has a rather annoying voice. The transfer is top-notch.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m thinking that you’re thinking that I forgot just what we’re supposed to be doing today.

Have I mentioned that the rain in Spain stays mainly on the plain and also on the plane? Have I mentioned that today is Food Day here at haineshisway.com? Yes, it’s our new Saturday feature. I have decided the today’s Food Day food is pizza. We must all eat pizza today, whether a slice or a whole pie. We must then post about our pizzas in loving detail – toppings, crust, and yummiliciouness. I have so been craving pizza, I cannot wait to begin Food Day.

I hope all of our haineshisway.com singles are getting ready for Valentine’s Day on Monday. We must have our candy hearts at the ready, and our Be My Valentine cards at the ready. Cupid’s arrow must land in a few haineshisway.com butt cheeks. Love is in the air. Love is in bloom. Love is sweeping the country, and it’s all happening here on Monday – the place to be for Valentine’s Day.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must hopefully sleep in, since I only had four hours of sleep the night before, I must drive about in my motor car, I must hopefully collect some packages, I must write, and most importantly I must deliver a whole batch of new pages to my friend Margaret. These are critical pages and I’m praying she’ll like them and that they work for her. Today’s topic of discussion: What are the most exotic foodstuffs you’ve ever eaten? Where did you eat them? Did you like them? My most exotic food is probably Ethiopian, which I quite enjoyed for about four bites before wanting to vomit on the ground. Let’s hear all about your most exotic foods. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, too, and let’s have loads of lovely pizza posts as well.
