March 18, 2005:

I THINK I’M GONNA LIKE IT HERE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am in New York, New York, and am already having a splendidly splendid time. My flight in was lovely, I went through half my book, there was virtually no traffic coming into the city, and had it not been for the fershluganah St. Patrick’s Day Parade totally screwing up every route to the hotel, I would have been in by three-forty, rather than four-forty. The hotel I’m in is quite nice – each room a suite. I have a nice big bed, and in the sitting room I have a nice big piece of exercise equipment, which I’m rather amused by. After I got settled in, I took a nice walk, then came back and made ready to meet elmore and my New York assistant and pal, Jonathan. We convened at Joe Allen, and my goodness did the fur fly. Ears must have been burning all over the United States of America. The food was yummilicious and the host was quite pleased when I told him that Joe Allen’s figured prominently in Writer’s Block. He’s even going to try and come to the signing today. The sun was out for my arrival, and the weather is quite crisp but lovely. I think I’m gonna like it here. What am I, Annie all of a sudden?

This morning I’m meeting up with Mr. Tony Walton, then I toddle off to rehearse the songs, then we all toddle off to The Drama Bookshop for the signing. I’m hoping we have a good crowd there. After the signing, I think some of us will toddle off to Joe Allen’s again for some merriment and mirth and laughter and legs. I shall, of course, have a full report for you. And yes, Virginia, I am taking photos, although I will not be able to post them until my return on Sunday.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m writing these here notes quite late and I must get my beauty rest.

I do think I’m going to attempt to see a matinee tomorrow – perhaps if I can score a single to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. There is a revival (what else is new) of Glengarry Glen Ross coming in (starry – with Alan Alda and Jeffrey Tambor) and I could not believe the top ticket is going for ninety-two bucks. That’s just a wee bit out of control, if you ask me. I’m glad to see Dame Edna is still here and going strong. Christina Applegate is still up in lights at the Hirschfeld Theater. I wonder when they’ll get around to changing that?

Mr. Rupert Holmes did a signing yesterday, but then left town this morning to go to another city. Not only did he solicit my advice about doing the CD that comes with his book (hmmm, a CD with a book, what an idea!), but I now see that he used my man Lanny Meyers to do the charts. How funny is that? And apparently one of the songs on the CD is a cut song from Drood – the very one I recorded on Lost in Boston, if I’m hearing correctly. A CD with a book, what an idea! I wish I’d thought of that. Oh, wait, I did, back in 2001. Of course, the first one to do a CD with a book was Miss Judy Collins.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must walk, I must meet with Mr. Walton, I must rehearse, I must read, sing, and sign, not necessarily in that order, and then I must eat foodstuffs at Joe Allen. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? Since I’m in New York, New York, I cannot answer the question, so I leave it to you. You know, I think I’m gonna like it here.
