A DAY FOR ALL YOU MOTHERS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am getting quite a late start on these here notes, so I shall try and write then in a hurry so they don’t cause me any worry. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I shall write in a hurry so I don’t worry therefore I’d better scurry and write in a flurry even though my eyes are blurry. Thank goodness I didn’t eat any curry or I’d be dancing like Arthur Murray. Well, that was a rousing start to the notes. Well, let’s get right to the meat of things, shall we? Let’s get right to the flank steak or the ground round, as it were, shall we? Yesterday, I had such a lovely day. It started off by my doing some fun bargain hunting for weird LPs, and I got several interesting ones, all of them quite inexpensive. I shall be transferring them all to CD very soon. I then attended the Pogue’s annual Derby Day, where I had a splendidly splendid time. The company was excellent, the food was excellent, and everything else was excellent. As always, the Pogue and his ever lovin’ Julieanne were the perfect hosts. I’ll post some photographs of the event later today. I then picked up the one package that was waiting for me – the package contained three brand spanking new CD box sets of music from every Godzilla film from 1954 through the late seventies. I have most of these soundtracks on single discs, but these box sets are supposed to have superior quality and I can sell the single discs now for decent money as they’re all out of print. I then did a few things I needed to do around the home environment, and then I met up with Miss Juliana A. Hansen and her mother, Diane, at Hamilton High School where we attended the second performance of Thoroughly Modern Millie.

The rights to the show haven’t even really been released yet, but Hamilton made a plea and they were granted permission to do it. Hamilton, as I’ve written before, is one of the leading high school arts magnet schools, and they do a really professional job on these shows. For Millie, they got former student Megan Campbell to come back and choreograph the show. Upon leaving Hamilton, Miss Campbell had gone directly to New York, auditioned for one show and not only got in it but was hired to understudy its leading lady – the show was Millie. Miss Campbell did an excellent job of recreating Rob Ashford’s choreography, and the kids did an excellent job of performing it. The cast did well by the show, although a few of them could have used stronger direction. Still, compared to most high school shows, the evening was quite professional, and the orchestra was the strongest they’ve ever had. This is my second time seeing Millie, and I’m afraid I just don’t care for it at all. I find it forced and silly, and I just don’t care about one single character in the piece. And I must say that I feel the exact same way about the film. This production chooses to copy the way Mrs. Meers is played, which I found annoying when I saw the tour, and which I found annoying last evening. The best thing in the tour was the two Asian fellows and the best thing in this production was the two Asian fellows, who really nailed their scenes. Mr. Ashford’s choreography is energetic and better than his other work I’ve seen, but I still don’t love it. But, we all had fun, and it’s always heartwarming to see young kids giving their all, especially when so many of them have real talent.

After the show, we went to Kate Mantilini’s, where I had great fish and chips. And that was my marvelously marvelous yesterday. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I have news to share.

The news I have to share is that today is a very special day. Today, for example, is Mother’s Day. So, to all you mothers out there (you know who you are), we wish you the happiest of days.

Today I have no plans whatsoever, and I shall relax prior to a very busy upcoming couple of weeks. I do have to book my New York trip in the next couple of days.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do very little – perhaps a bit of writing, perhaps a drive in the motor car, perhaps a meal, perhaps a DVD or three, and perhaps an errand or two. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics for once and we all get to make with the snappy posts. So, let’s have loads of lovely topics and loads of lovely posts, shall we? We had a rather slow day yesterday, much slower than our usual Saturdays, so let’s get some fun stuff going today.
