FRESH AS A DAISY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, part two of the Guy Haines mixing session takes place today, so I must write these here notes quickly so that I can get my beauty rest and be fresh as a daisy in the morning. I’m hoping we get through everything – I’m not quite sure how far Vinnie got on his pre-mixes yesterday. I gave a listen to what we’d done on Monday and everything sounded really good to me. I have a few really nitpicky things to do, but they’re so minor that if I didn’t do them it wouldn’t really matter. However, I’ll do them anyway, just because I’m a bit of a perfectionist. We’ve got seven songs today, but several of them should be very simple once I comp the vocals. After the session, I may or may not be supping with our very own Juliana A. Hansen – I’ll know at some point in the afternoon. I did quite a lot yesterday. I entered all the book fixes from one of my proofers, then took the file to Kinko’s to print up a couple of up-to-date copies, one of which goes to the final proofer tomorrow. I hope to have her corrections back within a week, then I’ll enter those, give the book a final read-through, and then I’ll begin working with Grant on its design. He’s found a title treatment I’m currently living with to see if I like it enough. It’s quite nice, but I just have to make sure it’s the right feel. I shall be releasing a little bit of information on the book next week. Yesterday I also found out that whilst I’m in New York, New York doing Miss Kerry Butler’s duet, I shall also be recording a show, which I’m very excited about. As soon as everything’s all signed and sealed, I’ll also tell you all about that, and perhaps I’ll even tell you all about Eve. So, the New York sojourn will be a little bit longer than I’d thought, so maybe I’ll get to see a show or two while I’m there. I also picked up the clothing that I had tailored at Armani Wells, as well as my new Tuxedo, which looks quite spiffy on me and fits rather perfectly. I am now a complete fashion plate and I shall not purchase any more items for a while. I also had a marvelously marvelous massage last night, which I really needed. I needed and she kneaded. It was serendipity. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Yesterday, I only had time to watch one count them one motion picture on DVD – I chose something short, one of the several westerns I hadn’t gotten around to. This motion picture on DVD was entitled A Good Day for a Hanging, starring Mr. Fred MacMurray, Mr. Robert Vaughn, Miss Joan Blackman, and a host of familiar character actors. This was a B-movie from Columbia, but it’s quite a good one. Directed by Nathan Juran (The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad), it’s a taut little oater with a surprising amount of depth to the characters. I was especially taken with Miss Joan Blackman’s performance. They couldn’t even afford a proper film score, so the entire film is tracked with music from 3:10 to Yuma by George Duning. It works reasonably well until some long action sequences, where the editing of cues together is just awful. The transfer is very grainy, which, I believe is caused by taking a pan-and-scan 1:37 ratio source print, matting it for 1:85 and making it anamorphic. It’s the only explanation that makes sense, because the framing is way too tight and frequently heads get cut in half. If they’d used proper source material, the film would look just fine, as it’s well photographed. Anyway, I liked it quite a bit. I began another film, which I’ll be finished with tonight – Ken Russell’s Billion Dollar Brain, a region 2 DVD and one I’ve really been looking forward to.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Don’t I have to get some beauty sleep so I can mix an album whilst being fresh as a daisy? Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I have exhausted all possible topics for this section.

Another interesting thing I’ll be doing tomorrow, for example, is talking to the person who I believe will be designing the Kritzerland website. I’ve given her several examples of sites I like, including this here site. I want it to be attractive, functional, easy to use, with a shopping cart that is problem-free. It won’t be anything like the website of my other label – this one will be simple as can be.

Another interesting thing I’ll be doing this week is meeting with Miss Tammy Minoff’s “money” person – the fellow who will be helping us get the money together to do a play come August or September. I’m hoping that play will be this little thriller I’m working on. I hope to start act two tomorrow as well. Act One may still be a bit on the short side, but it’s just impossible to tell and I don’t really want to add any more just to have to cut it if we’re the right length now. So, some time next week I’m going to have a little read through with Tammy and another actor, to see how it feels and to see what length we’re really at.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, finish mixing an album, I must perhaps sup with Miss Juliana A. Hansen, I must make yet more telephone calls prior to leaving for the mix (there is much to be done regarding this upcoming recording), and I must pick up a package or three. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers, as well as loads of lovely postings.
