FROTHY BON MOTS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, June is off and running. If you see June, tell her to slow up, for heaven’s sake. June is always off and running. Such a flibbertigibbet is June. Where was I? I was sitting in front of my laptop typing frothy bon mots, that’s where I was. Have you ever typed a frothy bon mot? It’s ever so much fun. Sometimes, just as a diversion, I type a frothy mot bon. That shakes things up, let me tell you that. I spent yesterday in a state of flux. I was fluxing all over the place, if you must know. I fluxed here, I fluxed there – I was fluxing so much I finally put on a tux so I could flux in a tux. I awoke at nine and was already in a state of flux, for reasons that eluded me then and elude me now. One reason for my flux is that I had two little nitpicky changes on the Guy Haines thing, which were both the result of the new reverb we used – both changes were to simply take Mr. Haines’ vocal back a teeny bit, as the new ‘verb made what we’d previously mixed too loud on two tracks. So, Vinnie made a new CD, I picked it up, and listened to it. But, it was weird, because suddenly all the tracks I’d loved last night (with the new ‘verb) didn’t sound as good. I thought I was losing my mind, frankly. I went back and forth between last night’s CD and today’s CD and it just wasn’t the same. And yet, how could it not be. Then I got to the fifth track and the wrong song came up. I immediately called Vinnie and left a message. He called back to say he’d gone dyslexic and mis-read the file he opened. So, the CD he’d made today was, in fact, the very first passes we’d done on the mix, with the two redos inserted in the order. He immediately did a corrected version and now everything sounds splendidly splendid and we have truly put the thing to bed. I’m glad my ears were acute enough to catch the mistake. I had no packages yesterday, which was annoying. That, and the fact that my three month old TV’s lamp blew out – that was most annoying as well. I have to call Mitsubishi this morning and supposedly they will overnight me a new bulb, and supposedly it is very simple to install, although the directions in the booklet are very confusing, as it never actually says to remove the old bulb. I’m sure it will become clear when I’m doing it on Friday. Certainly, Mitsubishi will get an earful of my displeasure at this turn of events. I finally got some writing done later in the day, and I finally got some food down my gaping maw.

Last night I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled The Drum, starring Sabu, Roger Livesy, and Raymond Massey. The film was an Alexander Korda production, and it’s quite a fun movie. I really miss this genre of film. It’s one they simply don’t do anymore, nor would they know how to do it anymore. Sabu is, as always, completely charming, Massey is dastardly, and Livesy is stalwart. The direction by Zoltan Korda is a bit clunky, but it all moves along and it’s all quite entertaining. The transfer, however, is not entertaining in the least. It’s a shambles, taken off awful source material – it’s soft, the color ranges from decent to faded, and the sound is grating to the ears. One can see glimpses of how glorious this early Technicolor film would look in a restored transfer. I’m looking forward to Elephant Boy next.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below whilst I think of some more frothy bon mots to type.

Frothy bon mot. There – I typed another one. Frothy bon mot – that sounds like a dessert, doesn’t it? Instead of the parfait, I’ll have the frothy bon mot – two perfect bon mots sitting in the midst of a frothy sauce. I want one now, don’t you?

Today, I shall be going to Mr. Grant Geissman’s house to begin work on designing the new book. I love watching him do it – he’s really good at it, and very quick, too. I will then have a spot of dinner with him, and then I shall hie myself back to the home environment for another reading of my play – just Tammy, two actors, and myself. This is the first time I’ll actually hear the ending, which wasn’t quite finished for our last reading. I’ve also added about five pages between the two acts, so it will be nice to see if they work.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must write, I must type some frothy bon mots, I must watch Grant at work, and then I must have a reading of my play. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s poetry day here at haineshisway.com – please tell us your favorite poems, and print examples, too. I love the little poems of Dorothy Parker – they’re just such little gems, aren’t they? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and let’s even have some frothy bon mots whilst we’re at it.
