OLD MAN RIVER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it’s Friday, and I still have many things to do before I leave for Portland on Sunday. We hope to put the After the Ball booklet to bed today, and I should be getting the Guy Haines master to listen to today. Assuming that’s approvable, then I should be able to get everything to the pressing plant the day I return from Portland, or, I may get someone to deliver this stuff in my absence. The booklets get delivered by the designer, so all that I have to get them are the two CD masters. Today I will be dealing with the website designer, getting everything cleaned up and ready to go “live”, probably on the day of my return. Yesterday, I had a busier than busy morning making phone calls, proofing booklets, and whatnot. Then I had a lunch meeting, which was fun. Then I had to pick up packages, do some Fed Exing, and do some other errands as well. I finally stopped around five, and then wrote a couple of pages. I’m like Old Man River – I jes’ keep rollin’ along. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I’m like ol’ man river, I jes’ keep rollin’ along. I wonder if Old Man River was married? I wonder if there was a Mrs. Old Man River? I wonder if Mr. and Mrs. Old Man River had any young uns? I wonder if they all rolled along like so much fish? These are the questions that are rolling around the windmills of my mind. Where was I? Oh, yes, I jes’ keep rollin’ along, like Old Man River and family.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled Danger: Diabolik. What a wacky motion picture it is, too. The film, directed by Mr. Mario Bava, stars Mr. John Phillip Law, Miss Marissa Mell, and Mr. Terry-Thomas. It has a strange and jaunty score by Mr. Ennio Morricone. It’s all very silly and very stylish, and, unlike Modesty Blaise, it’s actually still watchable. The transfer is excellent, if a bit dark, and the sound is crisp mono, as it should be. I also finished watching Swing Hostess, starring Miss Martha Tilton. It’s a PRC quickie – very low budget, but it has a sort of loopy charm to it, despite its awful script and production values. First off, Miss Tilton is great. I just loved her in this film, and I love her voice. Why she wasn’t a bigger star is an enigma wrapped inside of a conundrum. There are a couple of really good Livingston and Evans songs, especially Say It With Love, which is very catchy. The transfer is nothing to write home about, but it’s watchable. This film is one of the fifty included in the Classic Musicals DVD Collection, which can be had for about thirty bucks or so. All the films in the collection are in the public domain, but the set is loaded with rarities and, since the movies cost about seventy cents each, it’s quite a bargain.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because like Old Man River I’ve got to keep rollin’ along.

I spent a good deal of last evening nosing around the new Kritzerland site. I think it’s going to be quite nice. It’s very simple, easy-to-use, and pleasing to the eye. I didn’t want anything fancy-shmancy or difficult. There are several sections to the site, including a photo and video gallery, an interview section, and that kind of thing. Some of those sections won’t have content when we first go “live”, but will soon thereafter.

Today I have an early morning meeting to go to, then I should have the rest of the day to write, and hopefully proof and approve the Guy Haines master. And I hope to be done with all that by four, so I can just relax and smell the coffee or the roses or the ham hocks. I also have to figure out a fershluganah Unseemly Trivia Question for tomorrow.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must write, I must meet, I must greet, I must eat a sweet, I must walk on the street using my feet, I must be fleet and never miss a beat and I must complete all my tasks so I can eat a sandwich on whole wheat – won’t that be a treat? I thought that would never end, and yet, like Old Man River, it jes’ kept rollin’ along. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, the four disc Michel Legrand set from France, which has not left the player for days. It’s magnificent. DVD, next up, Prime Cut. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we all jes’ keep rollin’ along, like Mr. and Mrs. Old Man River and family.
