THE WHIRLING DERVISH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, can you believe it’s already Friday? I can, because it is. What a whirling dervish of a week this has been. It’s been hectic, maddening, rewarding, fruitful, stupid, frenetic, and wacky, but we have survived it all with good humor and force of will and grace. Every day has been an adventure, as you know from reading these here notes. Yesterday was no different. I woke up at nine, called Mitsubishi and worked out the details of the lamp and installer, which are both coming this morning. I then got a last-minute invite to breakfast at the Farmer’s Market, and since I was feeling antsy, I decided to go. As I do every morning, I went to the bedroom and made the bed and then opened the curtains. Unfortunately, as I opened them, one of the things that holds the curtain rod came out of the wall. I could not get it back in, nor could I find a handyman to come fix it. Tammy finally found me one and he’ll be here after four today. I then had a lovely breakfast (I actually just sat there like so much fish and didn’t eat), and then I bought a pair of the hottest new sunglasses on the market, made by Salt. I am so cool right now you can feel the chill when I walk down the street. I then had to go to Fed Ex, then to pick up mail, then to the bank. I finally got home, but then had to go Xerox scripts for the play reading last night. I then had to go directly to Mr. Grant Geissman’s, where we began designing the new tome. Then we went for a quick bite (again, I did not eat, having had a whole mess of tuna pasta salad earlier in the day), and then I came home for the reading.

It was a fascinating read through of the play. Tammy did much better – she really started “getting” her character, and she had much more energy than before. Since the last reading, aside from finishing the play, I’d added about five pages total to the play, and I’m happy to say all the changes worked really well, and really helped. The two other actors did fine, but neither was really right for their role. I actually have yet to hear one of the characters read as it should be, because we’ve just had such trouble finding actors, and all the ones we’ve found just aren’t right for it, either physically or acting-wise. So, for our next read though, we’re actually going to “cast” the reading – put that character on the breakdown services and audition people. Then, I’ll rehearse with them twice and our next reading will be in front of a small crowd of people. The laughs seem to be solid (they actually fell in the same places as last time), and the plot machinations all seem to play well. I’m really enjoying this process, and look forward to finally getting this on its feet, hopefully by end of summer.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because these here notes are flying by like a whirling dervish, aren’t they?

Today, after Mitsubishi, I shall be rehearsing with Mr. Kevin Spirtas, our first session in a real rehearsal hall. Then I’ll be back to welcome the handyman, who will put right the thing that holds the curtain rod. Then I shall be on my way to the Park of Oak to play poker at my friend David’s home environment.

Then, tomorrow, bright and early, I shall be on my way to the Pasadena Book Fair with our very own Pogue. I love book fairs, although, of late, the Pasadena show has proven to be a disappointment. I shall then be dining with Miss Barbara Deutsch.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must write, I must have a new lamp installed in my TV, I must rehearse, I must play poker, and I must find time to eat something unusual. And, if time permits, I will plan an Unseemly Trivia Contest for tomorrow’s notes. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player, and your DVD/video player. I’ll start: CD, Guy Haines, Les Choristes, and then Light in the Piazza. DVD, Elephant Boy, starring Sabu. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as our collective dervishes keep whirling away madly.
