SALLY FORTH

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must hurry and write these here notes because she of the Evil Eye will soon be here to clean the home environment. Therefore, I mustn’t tarry and I mustn’t dally. No, I must sally forth and stay away from the home environment for the next three hours. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I must not tarry, nor must I dally, I must sally forth or, at the very least, I must rebecca forth. Why is it always sally who’s forthing? That’s what I’d like to know. Where was I? Oh, yes, I must not tarry or dally. So, let me get right to the meat of the matter or the matter of the meat. Well, let’s do the former rather than the latter because the latter might get a little gamey. I don’t even know what the HELL I’m going on about. All this tarrying and dallying and sallying and meat has got me in a dither. So, if you’re asking whither the dither, the dither is hither. Yesterday, I slept a little later than I’d planned because I’d awakened in the middle of the night and spent a couple of restless hours before falling asleep again. I had to run and ship some CDs, and then I met our very own Miss Tammy Minoff for our What If anniversary lunch and waltz. We went to Hugo’s, where I had their yummilicious Eggs Benedict, and Tammy had their yummilicious Pasta Mama. I brought Tammy a little anniversary gift – this lovely perfume I discovered called Very Irresistible by Givenchy. She put some on her arm and her arm smelled quite intoxicating. After that, I picked up a few packages, and then delivered the masters for the Stages and Harvey Schmidt CDs. Then I came home, and had to do a lot of phoning and e-mailing, and then I had to sally forth to the El Portal Theater to check out their 99 seat space. We were all impressed with the vibe and also the xylophone. They really seem to want me to do the show there, which is nice. We wouldn’t be able to open until January, but it’s now so late in the year, that it’s really only waiting seven more weeks. It’s all going to depend on whether the set designer feels he can make the set work in that space. The more I think on it, the more I’m liking the idea of the El Portal. The theater in Hollywood is starting to feel less appealing to me – there’s just a weirdness to it, even though the actual inside of the theater is very nice. The El Portal, however, seems like a real theater, very substantial. Also, there’s free parking in a large lot behind the theater, and by January there will be two or three more restaurants opened, all within a block. We’ll decide this week and you will be the first to know. I then came home, then had a lovely supper, then came home, then watched some more episodes of Dragnet 1967. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must sally not dally with nary a tarry.

Have I mentioned I must sally forth before she of the Evil Eye casts her gaze my way?

Well, if it’s Saturday, it must be time for our Unseemly Trivia Contest. So, here it is:

This theatrical season produced an amazing number of musicals and plays, one right after another. Several of the musicals turned out to have long runs, and several of the plays did, too. One particular play ran under one hundred performances. It had quite a large cast, and was based on a well-known book. It had looked like a sure thing, but neither critics nor audiences took to it. Still, a few years later it became a hit motion picture, although none of the cast or creative team was involved. Starring in the play was a performer much more familiar to filmgoers than theatergoers – a big movie star. Also in the show was someone who was better known as a singer than an actor. Also in the show was someone who was better known as an actor than a singer, yet this person would, just a few years later, go on to star in a hit musical. Also in the cast was an actor who would, just a few short years later, start his ascendancy to becoming a well-known movie star. Finally, also in the cast was an actor who had played a small but quite unique role in a hit musical a few seasons earlier, a role he repeated when the musical came to the screen.

Name the play.

Name the big movie star.

Name the performer who was better known as a singer than an actor.

Name the performer who was better known as an actor than a singer, and name the hit musical in which the performer would star a few years later.

Name the cast member who, just a few years later, would begin the journey to becoming a major motion picture star.

Name the actor who had a small but unique role in a hit musical a few years earlier, a role repeated in the film version of said musical.
Remember, DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS TO THE SITE. Send them to me at bruce@haineshisway.com (and don’t worry if you get a bounced e-mail notice – I do get them). Good luck to one and all and also all and one. You have until midnight on Monday to submit your excellent answers.

I may be having a breakfast meeting with Tammy and mum to discuss the theater situation. Then, I have the whole glorious day to do whatever I choose. I may choose to snooze. I may choose to wear shoes. I won’t choose to have the blues. I won’t choose to listen to the news or to dring booze. I may choose to pay my union dues. Or, I may choose to speak to some fellow Jews.

Now wait just a darned minute. Quick, let’s all put on our pointy party hats, let’s all break out the cheese slices and ham chunks, let’s dance the Hora and the Black Bottom, for today is dear reader Stuart’s actual birthday. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own dear reader Stuart. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN DEAR READER STUART!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, sally forth, I must write, I must maybe have a breakfast meeting, I must pick up packages, I must ship out a large order of CDs, and I must watch a DVD or three. Today’s topic of discussion: Since these entire notes sound like a Danny Kaye routine, what are your all-time favorite Danny Kaye films and songs? I adore Mr. Kaye as a performer, but still haven’t seen his entire output, so I’m looking forward to your thoughts. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we neither tarry nor dally and whilst we sally forth like a gazelle with a head cold.
