WELL, DEAR READERS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, do you realize that I have begun every single notes with the phrase “Well, dear readers?” Why is that? Come November I will have begun over 1400 daily notes with “Well, dear readers.” I wonder what would happen if one fine day I did not open the notes with the phrase “Well, dear readers.” I wonder if the earth would stop turning? I wonder if havoc would ensue? I wonder if people everywhere would suddenly stop and say “What in tarnation is going on?” And do you know what’s even more perplexing? What is more perplexing is that I type “Well, dear readers” anew for every notes. You’d think I’d just have it there at the top of the blank page, but no, I type it anew every time. In any case, I have no answers, I just thought I’d bring up the fact that over 1400 times I have begun the notes with “Well, dear readers.”

My goodness, that was an entire paragraph about nothing whatsoever. I feel it is good to sometimes have a paragraph that just sits there like so much fish and is about nothing whatsoever. Speaking of nothing whatsoever, I had a perfectly pleasant day yesterday doing perfectly pleasant things. Not all that much happened, but for some reason I just really enjoyed the day. I shipped out some packages, got a nice order from Tower Records in New York, I got some decent mail and a nice package, and I spent over two hours throwing away junk from two closets and several drawers. It’s amazing what accumulates – I should have tossed all this stuff when I moved last year, but I never had the time to go through it all, and I just shoved everything into drawers and closets. I was quite weary after that, so I ate some Popeye’s Fried Chicken, which made me even more weary. Then I sat on my couch like so much fish for the rest of the evening. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Last night I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled Il Bidone, a film of Federico Fellini. Il Bidone is generally considered a lesser film of Fellini, but it’s always been one of my favorites, from my favorite Fellini period. It’s a grim, relentlessly moody story, but it’s beautifully directed and has great performances, especially from Broderick Crawford and Richard Basehart. Giulietta Masina appears briefly as Basehart’s wife. There is the usual wonderful score from Nino Rota. This DVD from BFI (region 2) sports a much better transfer than the region 1 DVD from Image. There are several truly powerful sequences, and the scene where a con man’s daughter watches her father being arrested is heartbreaking. The ending is both brutal and tragic, not necessarily in that order.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below, whilst we ponder why I have written “Well, dear readers” over 1400 times.

Of course, whilst we’re pondering why I have begun the notes with “Well, dear readers” over 1400 times, we can also ponder the fact that I have written over 1400 notes without ever missing a day. I believe that is probably one for the Guiness Book of World Records, Internet-wise.

Today I must ship out the large Tower order along with a few more Kevin Spirtas CD single orders (they’ve been coming in steadily since the show aired). Mr. Spirtas has finally returned to LA and we’ll be lunching very soon. We’ll be doing his one-man show sometime before the end of the year, most likely in the big theater at the El Portal, as a benefit for victims of Katrina. We’ll probably do two shows – one invited and one paid, because we’ll be videotaping it and I want two complete passes. We’ll also be recording the show for release on CD. Stay tuned for more details.

Today I must also audition everyone at Los Angeles City College for our upcoming benefit show. I have written a new opening number for the show, and my plan is that all the current students who can sing (and those who can even carry a tune) will be in the number. I’m looking forward to it, actually.

I had a long telephonic conversation with Miss Cindy Williams, and there are some interesting things in the ether if I can just get her to buckle down, Winsocki. We’re going to try to meet up next week to discuss a myriad of things, including what she’ll be doing in the benefit.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, complete making corrections in my short story (as well as revising the final paragraph, which I’m still not happy with), I must do errands, I must pick up some packages, I must audition people, and I must sup. Today’s topic of discussion: Aside from this here website, which we all know will soon be the most popular site on all the Internet, what other websites do you visit regularly, which sites do you love, which do you loathe, and what Usenet newsgroups have you read through the years? And, what websites that are no longer with us have you enjoyed or hated? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we? Well, dear readers, we shall.
