October 28, 2005:

MEET CUTE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, the end of October is nigh. I ask you, where else on all the Internet can you get such up to the minute news? Nowhere that’s where. Yes, nigh is the end of October and soon it will be November. November, meet the end of October. October, meet the beginning of November. That is what is known as a meet cute, month-wise. I must tell you true, dear readers, I am a bit of a physical wreck right now. There is just so much on my plate right now, and so many things to attend to that my body is revolting, in the sense that it is tense and said tension is causing me achy muscles, especially in my neck. I suppose my body could be revolting in another way, but I leave that for others to judge. Perhaps my body needs a meet cute with some body judge. Yes, I am achy and sore and as Chester A. Riley would say, “What a revoltin’ development this is.” I need to take a nice hot shower and so I’m just going to breeze through these here notes because I need to soothe my aching musculature. Speaking of musculature, yesterday was quite an interesting day. I don’t really know why, but it just seemed interesting. I had to do quite a few errands, and speak to quite a few people, and set quite a few events for the next few days. In fact, the next few days are going to be non-stop. I’ve got to go to my music preparation gal’s place to have her create sheet music for three of my songs that are being done in the LACC benefit. I have to attend a little partay/get-together tonight. I’ve got to attend my 40 year class reunion tomorrow night. I’ve got to see a run-through of a new musical on Sunday morning, and then I have to attend the matinee of a musical being done in North Hollywood directly after. See what I mean? And I definitely want to have a meet cute or three, because I haven’t had a meet cute since the one that’s in Rewind (in the Emily chapter). In any case, I did a lot of stuff yesterday, and then I finally sat on my couch like so much fish, while my body revolted.

Last night I watched two count them two motion pictures on DVD. The first motion picture on DVD was entitled The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, directed by Dario Argento (his first film), and starring Suzy Kendall, Tony Musante, and Eva Renzi. It’s been out on DVD before, but this Blue Underground DVD is a Special Edition and its transfer is directly off the newly-rediscovered camera negative. The film is an odd bird – very suspenseful, not too-too violent (I can’t watch Argento movies after Cat o’ Nine Tails because of their excruciatingly excruciating violence), a cool Ennio Morricone score, and some very stylishly directed and photographed (by Vittorio Storaro) scenes. It’s ultimately a bit silly, but I have always enjoyed the film, and this new transfer is truly faboo. There are some very nice extras, including long interviews with Argento, Morricone, Storaro, and Eva Renzi (the interview was shot just prior to her death at much too young an age – sixty). Her interview is wonderful – very funny, and full of catty comments. If you like thrillers, you’ll probably get some enjoyment out of this new DVD. I then watched the second motion picture on DVD, which was entitled Sword of the Beast, a samurai film by Hideo Gosha, a director I’m very fond of. I’d never seen this film, and I must say I found it really excellent. It tells its tale in a crisp 85 minutes, the direction is great, the performances are subtle and terrific, and I just really enjoyed every minute of it. The DVD is from Criterion and the transfer is crisp black-and-white scope.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Did Ebert and Roeper meet cute? Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because perhaps we’ll have a meet cute in the next section.

Nope, not a meet cute in sight, or even in site. I hate when that happens.

My goodness, that paragraph had brevity, didn’t it? And brevity, after all, is the soul of wit and, conversely, wit is the soul of brevity.

I think I shall wrap up these here notes, because I really must go stand in very hot water for a very long time. I’m sure I have other things to talk about, but I’ll save it for posts during the day. Tomorrow, we’ll have nice long notes.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must be wanton and lustful, not necessarily in that order – I don’t know why, but I feel that today is a wanton and lustful day. I must do errands, create sheet music, attend a get-together, and do organizational work. I must also begin preparing all the packages for The Last Starfighter CD – I’m going to attempt to have everything addressed and ready so that all I’ll have to do when the CDs arrive is stick them in the packages. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, a new Michel Legrand album, to be followed by two classic Claude Bolling jazz albums from the 70s. DVD, next up will be the new special edition of Wages of Fear. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and while you’re posting, tell us your favorite meet cute story (my favorite meet cute stories are in the books – Benjamin’s meet cute with Susan, and later, Samantha, and the Emily meet cute in Rewind).
