NOT-SO-FREE-FLOWING VERSE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it is Friday. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, it is Friday. Wasn’t it just Friday? It seems like it was just Friday and yet it’s Friday again. Are we being inundated with too many Fridays? Has someone changed all the days of the week to Fridays? I tell you, it is maddening to say the least. Where was I? Oh, yes, it is Friday. Yesterday, I had difficulty even trying to write these here notes in iambic pentameter (IP, in Internet lingo), so today I was going to try and write these here notes as free-flowing verse. As soon as I started writing these here notes as free-flowing verse, a window popped up and told me that flowing verse now costs $10.98 per month. Well, wasn’t that a kick in the pants? Nothing is free anymore, not even flowing verse. Damn them, damn them all to hell. I haven’t decided yet whether to go ahead and pop for the $10.98 and write these here notes in paid-flowing verse. Where was I? Oh, yes, it is Friday. You’ve heard of a month of Sundays? This is a month of Fridays. Speaking of Fridays, yesterday I spent a rather busy day doing many things. For example, I got up in the morning. I answered e-mails, made some telephonic calls, and then wrote for a couple of hours before heading off to do some errands in my motor car. I then had a nice production meeting at LACC, and was very impressed with their tech people, whom I hadn’t met before. I think we’re going to have a swell-looking show thanks to them. I will be meeting next week with the students that I’ve cast for the show. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve written a special opening number and they’ll be doing the bulk of it. I then came back home and ate some dinner, and attended to more things around the home environment. Then I attempted to write some free-flowing verse and was told that verse comes with a price these days, that price being $10.98 per month. Where was I? Oh, yes, it’s Friday.

Last night, I watched two count them two motion pictures on DVD. The first motion picture on DVD was entitled We’re No Angels, starring Mr. Humphrey Bogart, Mr. Peter Ustinov, and Mr. Aldo Ray, along with Leo G. Carroll, Joan Bennett, and Basil Rathbone, and a snake named Adolph. I found the first third of the film rather boring, but then everything suddenly started to work, and the comedy got funny and the whimsy didn’t make you want to throw up. The three leads work very well together, and it’s a nicely directed by Mr. Michael Curtiz, who helmed Mr. Bogart in Casablanca. It’s ultimately a very amusing and sweet film, and I enjoyed it. The transfer isn’t one of the Paramount greats – it’s too dark, there is quite a bit of flickering, and it’s a bit on the soft side. The colors are vivid and excellent, so it’s a shame the rest of it couldn’t be as good. I then watched the second motion picture on DVD, which was entitled Jiminy Glick in Lalawood, starring Mr. Martin Short. Jiminy Glick as a TV show had its truly hilarious moments, but even as a half-hour show it became trying. As a ninety minute movie, it’s really pretty awful. The only really funny things are the actual celebrity interviews, which take up about fifteen minutes of the film. The other seventy-five minutes are completely unfunny with a labored plot trying to spoof David Lynch movies, of all things. I gather this film didn’t even play a week, and was a complete disaster, both critically and at the box-office. That doesn’t stop the youngsters at the imdb from proclaiming it a comic masterpiece. They must have seen some other movie. In any case, whoever’s idea it was to do a full-length feature with this character, should have his/her head examined. And whoever funded the thing should not be in the movie business. The transfer is fine, but it’s into the return pile for Jiminy.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Don’t I have some not-so-free-flowing verse to write? Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because, after all, it’s Friday.

The big news of the day is that at some point today or this evening we will begin taking preorders for the cast album of The Last Starfighter, the latest Kritzerland release, with a score by the marvelous Skip Kennon, and a book (based on the screenplay) by our very own FJL, Mr. Fred Landau. It’s quite a delightful CD and one I think you’ll all really enjoy. So, come to the Starlite Starbrite Trailer Park and here all about Alex and Maggie and their adventures. For anyone who enjoyed the film of The Last Starfighter, this musical version really captures its fun and innocence. So, keep checking in at kritzerland.com and be sure to order yourself a copy, as preorders are our lifeblood. Street date is November 15th, but we should have them in hand sometime in the first few days of November, and will ship at least a week or two early.

Today I must rehearse with Mr. Kevin Spirtas, and then I may or may not be seeing a musical comedy this evening. I’ll know around two o’clock.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example write some free-flowing verse that isn’t free, I must do a run-through of Mr. Kevin Spirtas’ show, I must do errands and whatnot, not necessarily in that order. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday (when isn’t it?) – what is currently in your CD player, and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, Alexandre Desplat’s soundtrack to The Girl With The Pearl Earring, and The Last Starfighter. DVD, next up are the German imports of Leone’s Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and remember, there is a charge if you write any free-flowing verse.
