SPEED WRITING

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must once again write these here notes in a hurry. What am I, the poster child for the Evelyn Wood Speed Writing course? Or did Evelyn Wood do Speed Reading. Evelyn did some sort of speeding, that’s all I know. In any case, this will be another instance of the Evelyn Wood Speed Writing course as done by BK. I must jump right in and tell you that Mr. Kevin Spirtas’ show went very well indeed – very smooth, with only a couple of minor bumps, which we covered in pickups after the show. My day started at ten in the morning. I began by setting the light cues for the show with the lighting man. Then we set the stage, figured out where the piano would live, and began getting ready for a cue to cue walkthrough. Vinnie arrived at ten-thirty to begin setting up his immense recording rig under the stage. The camera crew arrived at eleven, and we figured out where the four cameras would be living, and then they began their long setup. Getting the sound to work for Vinnie, the cameras, and the house took a while. Kevin and John Boswell arrived at one, and Miss Tammy Minoff arrived shortly thereafter so we could set her little walk on part as a nurse (an inspiration of mine from last week). From two to four we ran cue to cue for both acts. I could see there were some problems immediately, so after we broke for a meal, I sat with the lighting guy and did some additions and fixes, and realized that I was going to have to sit with him and call the cues. The video monitors were in the lighting booth, so I split my time going back and forth between calling cues and making sure the shots were good. Everyone else got back to the theater around six, and we did a quick sound check, and that was that. We ended up having quite a large house, and it was a really friendly audience. I went out and made my usual pre-show recording announcement, and got a sound level on the audience. Then, at seven-fifteen the show began. Kevin grabbed the audience in the first number and never let them go. He was in terrific voice, and the laughs were all there in all the right places. Several of the numbers got huge cheers. The only mishap in act one was when Kevin accidentally knocked the mic out of its stand at the end of the act one closer. We picked that up at the end of the show. Act two went equally as well, and Kevin received three count them three standing ovations. We spent about thirty minutes doing the seven or so pickups we had to do, and then Kevin and some friends and I went out for a bite to eat. All in all, we couldn’t have been happier. Vinnie and I will now edit the CD, and we’ll begin editing the video in a week or two. The CD will be available in late January, and the DVD will be available a few months later. And there you have the Evelyn Wood Speed Writing version of yesterday.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’ve got more Speed Writing to do in the next section.

Sunday night, I finished watching a motion picture on DVD entitled Apres Vous (After You). This film is yet more evidence that the only wonderful films keep coming out of France. In the film, the great Daniel Auteuil plays a maitre’d who, when walking through the park, sees a man who’s trying to hang himself. He saves the man and takes him home with him. From there, it’s a merry romp – very, very funny, and also warm and sweet, too. And many wonderful shots of yummilicious-looking food. I don’t want to say too much more, other than it’s a delightful film with wonderful performances and excellent writing and direction. The transfer is great, and I recommend this highly.

Today, I would love to be sleeping in, but I have a breakfast meeting with Miss Cindy Williams and her manager. At least I think it’s a breakfast meeting. We’ll see when I arrive at the restaurant at ten.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, have a breakfast meeting, then I must come home and pack up a bunch of recent orders and get them shipped out – otherwise, I’m taking the rest of the day off. Today’s topic of discussion: What other languages beside English do you speak fluently or even non-fluently? What languages would you most like to learn and be fluent in? What languages did you take in high school that you can no longer remember or, that you can remember? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we? And so, my Evelyn Wood Speed Writing course has come to an end, and for the rest of the week I shall take my sweet time.
