LONG NIGHT’S JOURNEY INTO DAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am quite nauseous. I ask you, where else on all the Internet can you read such an opening salvo? Nowhere, that’s where. And what is the cause of said nausea? Yesterday, for luncheon I went to a little Mexican joint I hadn’t been to since around 1980, near where I used to live back then. I thought to myself, “Myself, why don’t you just stop in there, haven’t been in ages, and the food was pretty good.” And so I did. I got a beef taco and a bacon and egg burrito. I ate the food around one and at around three I started feeling nauseous. I chewed on some Tums and just took it easy, but the nausea has remained. I’m praying it’s not complete food poisoning, but if it is I tell you I will go back to that restaurant tomorrow and barf on their floor. Please, any late night denizens, send excellent vibes and xylophones that this isn’t food poisoning. I really don’t want to go to the food poisoning place, I really, really don’t. I’ve got too much to do to be down for that particular count. I thought the nausea was abating a couple of hours ago, but now it’s gotten worse and I’m really queasy. Other than that, yesterday turned out to be quite busy, with a lot of running around, getting Christmas cards ordered (they’ll be ready today), shipping, buying some stamps for said Christmas cards, and doing some banking. Man, am I queasy. I hope I can get through these here notes, that’s how queasy I am. Last night we had a very good rehearsal – worked on blocking details, and I decided to make a little cut in the second act to help one particular moment. I’m not sure about it, and I think I’ll try it both ways in previews. Oh, boy, that was close. You don’t want to know anything more than that was close. I fear I’ve got some form of food poisoning after the close thing. I hope it stops there, but I just don’t know. If I get it bad, then I suppose I may have to cancel tomorrow night’s rehearsal, which would not be good, since we had to cancel Friday night’s rehearsal as Matt Ashford is shooting late. I suppose all we can do is hope for the best and hope that if I’ve got it that it’s mild. Damn them, damn them all to hell.

Yesterday, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled Morocco, a film of Josef von Sternberg, starring Miss Marlene Dietrich, Mr. Gary Cooper, and Mr. Adolphe Menjou. Morocco is a one-off film, as are most of Mr. von Sternberg’s films. You’ve never seen anything like it, and his direction of this 1930 film remains as stunning today as it was back then. There have never been close-ups like the close-ups of Miss Dietrich or Mr. Cooper. They are both so impossibly beautiful that it’s breathtaking. Mr. Menjou is wonderful in the role of the man who’s in love with Dietrich but knows he will never possess her. The print, while a bit soft (the film is shot with heavy filters, but should be a bit sharper than this transfer), is in amazing shape given the film’s age. Morocco isn’t easy to describe, but if you want a one-off movie, this is truly unique. There’s never been anything like the collaboration between von Sternberg and Dietrich. Unfortunately, these new DVDs are from France, and who knows when they’ll get around to releasing them here in the States? But, if you have a multi-region player, hie yourself over to amazon France and take a chance.

I made it through one page of the notes at least. Quick, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I simply don’t know how much more writing I can do.

I tell you, this I did not need. One wrong food decision, that’s all it takes, I guess. It could be a very long night’s journey into day, that’s all I can tell you.

I have no idea what I’ll be doing today – it all depends on what condition my condition is in. What am I, Kenny Rogers and The First Edition all of a sudden?

I’m trying to write in short bursts in case I have to make a short burst to the other room. I tell you, if this is food poison I will barf on their floor tomorrow.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do my best not to let this thing get the better of me, I must let it run its course, which will hopefully be quick, because I have no time for this sort of thing. I will keep you all posted as to the progress, and whether I’ll be having rehearsal. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s food poisoning day here at haineshisway.com. How many times have you had food poisoning, where did you get it from, how bad was it, and how long were you down for? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I try my best not to spend the evening vomiting on the ground.
