December 30, 2005:

THE YEAR MY HAIR BECAME GRAYER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here we are in the final two days of 2005. Even this final week of 2005 has flown by, like a gazelle on a skateboard. One thing that has happened this year is that I have doubled the amount of gray in my hair. I’ve always had gray in my hair, but the gray hairs have always been underneath the brown hairs. But now, they are overtaking the brown hairs at an alarming rate. It’s not a problem for me, as I like the look of it. It’s not surprising, given some of the stresses and pressures of the year. At least I don’t have an ulcer or gout or a boil or corns or warts or ingrown toenails. I can deal with gray hair – I could not deal with ulcers or gout or boils or corns or warts or ingrown toenails. In any case, here we are in the final two days of 2005, the year my hair became grayer. I, for one, am looking forward to 2006, and hope it will be a splendidly splendid year for all of us. Yesterday, I attended to many things, didn’t get any writing done, but had a lovely luncheon with the LACC folks, and then a good meeting with my set people at the theater. The more I talk about this LACC musical theater workshop, the more excited I’m getting. Several alums are planning to enroll in the class, and even our own Miss Tammy Minoff may enroll. I’m seriously beginning to think about what show we’ll do next May, and it may end up being an original musical, which would be very exciting. I can see this growing into something very special indeed. Our set is looking quite wonderful – today we saw the furniture on it, and it really looks like a nice New York apartment. Our producer remarked that the bathroom in the set is nicer than her bathroom at home. We had a very good work through of act one last night – stopping, working on details and moments, and getting the actors more solid on their lines. I think we’re all really enjoying the rehearsals right now – lots of good stuff happening. And then, I came home and sat on my couch like so much fish and ate some of dear reader Jane’s yummilicious fudge.

Last night, I finally got around to starting the DVD of Orchestra Wives. I’m only twenty minutes in, but I cannot tell you of the pleasure I’m having watching it and listening to all those great tunes – the film is filled with classic Glenn Miller stuff. I’ll have a full report when I’ve finished it tonight.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because the day is already speeding by, like a gazelle doing the fifty-yard dash in gold lame pants and a red sequined blouse.

Today I have quite a busy little day, starting with an early luncheon at Marie Callendar’s, with my late friend Esther’s kids, who are now all grown up (two of them are married already). I’ve known the kids since they were very young, and I was practically a surrogate father to them all throughout the 80s. After their mom passed away (at the much too young age of fifty-three), we sort of lost track of each other. We reconnected a couple of months ago, and today is our reunion lunch, which I’m very much looking forward to. After that, I have many things to do, and then tonight we are all convening at the El Portal to shoot a little video thing for the play. My friend David Wechter is producing the shoot, and we have a wonderful cameraman, who we’ve worked with a lot. I’m hoping it won’t take more than a couple of hours, which would leave us a little time to run some things on the set for the first time, prior to our first run-through on the set come Monday evening. Now, speaking of our play, several hainsies/kimlets have mentioned wanting to see it opening weekend, so where do we stand on that. I would hope that at least a few of you can make it here, and if you do, we will have many celebrations and hainsies/kimlets get-togethers, just as we did for dear reader PennyO’s show in New York. However, if it’s going to happen, I should think we’d better start planning now. I know the original date we were speaking of would be Saturday the 14th of January, but we do run for eight weeks, so it could be on a different date if that were easier. Let’s have a discussion on the board, and let me know your thoughts.

My goodness, 2005 is almost a memory, isn’t it? 2005 is winding down and in two days it will be no more. It will not exist except as something to look back upon. I, for example, will look back upon 2005 as the year my hair became grayer.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, lunch, do errands, drive about in my motor car, perhaps write a page or three, and also make some telephonic calls. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player, and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, the complete Arnold Bax symphonies on Chandos. I really don’t love the sound on these recordings (very concert hall washy), but I’m enjoying hearing these works back-to-back. DVD, Orchestra Wives, and Blake Edwards’ The Tamarind Seed. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we get ready to bid a fond farewell to 2005.
