COGENT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, my eyes are blurry and my mind is blurry but I shall try to be cogent, nonetheless, oh, yes, I shall try to be cogent nonetheless. We have survived our second preview, and I think it was basically a very good show. A few “second performance” weirdnesses, but all the notes we addressed worked perfectly, so that was good. We’re still having one serious technical issue involving a prop, and we have to fix it once and for all today when we arrive at the theater, because it hasn’t worked now for three performances (it’s actually a piece of black gaffer’s tape that isn’t sticking as it should – we know the reason and have been trying to deal with it, and today we must). Thankfully, we had almost a full house, and it was a very nice audience. The show didn’t start off quite as strongly as it did the night before, but Tammy, who has the first lines, knew why, and will adjust back to the better way. There were a few line fumfers (not noticeable to the audience), but basically the show ran smoothly, in fact, more smoothly than the first preview. The audience, once again, seemed to really be into the characters and the plot, and there were several intakes of breath just where we wanted them, and several other little audible reactions that were great. There were also several large laughs and many chuckles. And rapt silence in the dramatic parts – you could really tell they were involved, intrigued, and interested. I have been writing comedy for so long that I get a little antsy when laughs aren’t coming, until I remember that this play isn’t a comedy – it’s a thriller with a few good laughs, and we’re getting those laughs, and the actors are getting more solid with each run in terms of knowing where the laughs are. The audience was a pretty even mix of elderly and young. After the show, several of the older people made a point of finding me and telling me they thought we had a winner, which, believe you me, was very much appreciated. We’d already heard from our papering service that the buzz was really good coming out of the first preview. So, as long as we continue to address the few things that still aren’t landing, and as long as we fix the one prop issue, I think we’ll be fine to open on Friday. And then, it will be what it will be.

My goodness, that was fairly cogent, wasn’t it? Considering that my eyes and blain are blurry – eyes and blain? You see? Considering that my eyes and blain are blurry I felt that my cogency was very cogent. I am proud of my cogentness. And I shall strive to continue being cogent for the rest of these here notes.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m feeling quite cogent right now and thus must get to the next section as quickly as possible, before my I am merely coge instead of cogent.

Yesterday, I had quite a lovely day. I got together with our very own Miss Juliana A. Hansen, and we spent the early afternoon together, first lunching at The Eclectic CafĂ©, and then sitting on the couch like so much fish, and catching up on all she’s been doing. She also came to the play last night and professed to love it, as did her mother.

That was very cogent, wasn’t it? That was so cogent that it sent chills up and down my spine and Aladdin’s lamp was mine. What am I, Jerome Kern and Ira Gershwin all of a sudden?

That was less cogent, wasn’t it? Perhaps we’re having the law of diminishing returns, cogent-wise. Speaking of cogent, today I shall attempt to relax a bit. I don’t have to be at the theater until six, so that’s nice. I have to pack and ship a couple of orders, but otherwise I don’t have all that much scheduled – I may try to work in a haircut today or tomorrow if Teddy can fit me in. And tonight, it’s preview number three, so please continue to pray for Rosemary’s Baby.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, be cogent, both morning, noon, and night. Can it be “both” if it’s morning, noon, and night? Isn’t that more than a “both”? I’m afraid I’m not being cogent anymore. I’m afraid my cogency has bit the dust, although what the dust did to deserve being bit is anyone’s guess. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old thing you like, and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers, shall we – oh, and do be cogent, won’t you?
