MACARONI AND CHEESE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I am exhausted. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I am exhausted. I am in need of sleep, blessed sleep. And yet, I must arise very early and go to an audio session, after which I may have to go back in the editing room to notate every single shot in both spots – I’ve been trying to understand why they need this, since none of the sample scripts I got are done that way, and since there is a shot list on a CD, but we keep going around in circles. I think it’s because these spots are very different than what they usually get, and they just don’t seem to understand that. The music in the spots is all internal, all from the show itself – no library music, so no cues to write down. And there’s nobody in the spots except the regulars on the show. Oh, well, it will be two or three hours of drudgery if they absolutely must have it – I would have done it yesterday afternoon, but we got a very late start, and then when I talked to the folks in charge they seemed to think it was okay not to do it. Then, last night, the e-mails started coming and now it looks like it may be on again. So, I’m bleary-eyed and heavy-lidded, not necessarily in that order. Yesterday, I got up quite early and did some work, then went to LACC for the musical theater workshop (MTW). It was a wonderful class. About half the people got to sing today, and they really did better than I expected. I let them sing the song as they’d rehearsed it. Then, I talked a bit about each song, and what they’d done with it – what I felt worked, what I felt could be improved, and what I felt didn’t work at all. I then let them sing it again, addressing those notes, and in each case they did better and they really understood what was said and they were able to deal with it quickly. It was fun to watch them when it worked better – several of them were beaming after their second go-through. We’ll continue it tomorrow. I then went to lunch with Miss Tammy Minoff and her friend Lauren. I had the macaroni and cheese. The fact is, I’ve been on a macaroni and cheese kick. I get macaroni and cheese whenever I can and I kick it. It’s ever so much fun. The Hugo’s macaroni and cheese was excellent. I then came home briefly, met with PennyO, did some work, and then went off to the editing room, where my editor fixed what he’d done wrong. Because we got a late start, we didn’t finish until six, and then I had to run the tape over to the audio facility. I didn’t get home until seven. Once home, I had to deal with a barrage of e-mails. After that, I began to format the Linda Purl script – all the patter with all the song lyrics, but whoever typed the lyrics had so many errors and mis-formatting that I spent three hours fixing it all and then smoothing out the rest of the patter. And we’re still missing words and lines of songs, and a couple of songs in their entirety. I e-mailed the updated version to her and told her all the mistakes have to be fixed by tomorrow because I’ve got to print it out and insert the light cues for Saturday’s show. And then I had to start writing these here notes.

As I mentioned in a post yesterday, I’ve been asked to produce a cabaret series at LACC this summer, and I said yes, and I’m now starting to book the acts. Miss Linda Purl will definitely be doing her show, and Mr. Kevin Spirtas will, most likely, do his, if he can clear a night away from Hairspray. I’ve spoken to Jason Graae and I think he’ll be joining us, too. I’m still thinking about who else would be fun to have – they sort of have to have a recognizable name. I was thinking of asking Miss Susan Egan. If the four of them say yes, then I still have to find six other people. We’ll be doing the series in their black box space, and they’ve got a nice amount of money set aside for publicity. If it works, this will become a regular summer event.

Have I mentioned that I’m exhausted? Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must hit the road to dreamland before I fall over in my chair.

I wonder if I’ll have macaroni and cheese today? If I can rustle up a lunch or dinner partner, I just may.

Today I must do the early audio session, wait to find out if I’m doing the shot list in the script, and I must also pick up the master tapes for the STAGE benefit recording, which we begin mixing on Friday (well, Vinnie begins mixing – I don’t show up until Sunday or Monday). I’m still waiting to hear back from my CD pressing lady – she’s such a bloody flake, but I don’t have anyone else I can turn to, at least not for this release. Friday’s going to be a hellacious day of getting Linda’s show as smooth as possible, because Saturday, bright and early, we’ll be on our way to the Whittier venue where she’s doing her show. I still don’t know if I’m going to the Sunday show – I think they’ve decided to stay overnight, and I really don’t want to, as I just have too much going on. The Sunday gig is a four hour drive, so even if they were driving back after the show, we wouldn’t get home until close to two in the morning. We shall see.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, eat macaroni and cheese, I must try to get some writing time in, and I must deliver the Disney spots after the audio session. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we?
