OUTRE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it’s a holiday weekend and I, for one, say hoo and ray to that. It will be lovely to have one extra day, a day in which I intend to do nothing, other than have a little dinner meeting. I’m hoping to get a little shut-eye this weekend, as I’m quite overtired right now, and a bit cranky because of it. Perhaps I’ll be wild and wooly this weekend, just for the HELL of it. Wild and Wooly. Wasn’t that a comedy team from the 30s? Why, yes it was – Art Wild and Bert Wooly – they were great, especially their wonderful routine “Say What?” In any case, I may be wild and wooly this fine and long weekend. I may dance the Lambada (The Forbidden Dance), I may do something outré, I may, for example, grab someone on the street and impulsively hit my head against theirs. That would be outré. What the HELL am I talking about? Speaking of outré, I had quite a busy day yesterday, all of it spent mixing the audio for the two Disney spots. My editor screwed up some slates and end pages on the spots (his mind was wandering quite a bit during our sessions), and we have to go back in on Tuesday afternoon and he has to fix it. Then I have to do the audio layback on Wednesday morning and then we deliver and we’re done. Then I can invoice and get paid. I gather these little editor screwups happen quite often, which is too bad. I was quite annoyed that he made such a stupid mistake, but that’s the way the blue cheese crumbles. After the session, I went back home briefly, and then went over to the theater. We ran the end of act one bit that had been so sloppy the night before, and I was quite stern about it never being sloppy again. Two lighting instruments had to be replaced – one of them, a light outside the front door of the apartment, has never worked, not once. I asked about it way back in tech and was told it was there and working. I’ve always felt it was too dark when people made entrances, and now we know why. Heaven forbid our lighting designer should have noticed it in tech. But, he’s a first-class twit and we actually never saw him after the first tech. I don’t think I’ll be recommending him for any jobs – I wouldn’t wish him on anyone. But, that’s another story for another day. The parking situation at the theater is horrendous again, because Miss Bea Arthur’s show has opened (only there through Sunday, though). So, we’re getting interesting celebrities coming through, including Miss Debbie Reynolds, and last night we met Mr. Tony Tanner. Last night’s show was sharp, well played, and mostly everything worked really well. We had a small but wonderful audience. After the show, we hung out at the after party for Bea Arthur, then I went home and sat on my couch like so much fish, and ate some pistachio nuts.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m feeling that I might become wild and wooly or, at the very least, wooly and wild at any moment and this section has already had Wild and Wooly and doesn’t need any more.

Today I rehearse with Miss Linda Purl for a couple of hours, then I’m off to the Antiquarian Book Fair in Century City. That should be ever so much fun and I’ll probably spend two or three hours there. Then I shall come home, eat, and then be on my way to the theater for tonight’s performance. I’m told we’ll have a decent sized house this evening.

I really want to do something outré this weekend. I want to do something completely wacky and weird. Perhaps I’ll walk down the street singing the score to Whoop Up. Perhaps I’ll do the Limbo. Perhaps I’ll do my impression of a gazelle in a spandex jump suit. Perhaps I’ll just stay home and watch DVDs. Of course, we do have a hainsie/kimlet in town this week – our very own Pogue. I believe he’ll be seeing the play tomorrow, and then I’m sure we’ll have a meal or two before he leaves.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, rehearse, do the book fair, see a play, write, and eat, not necessarily in that order. I must also do something outré, mustn’t I? Perhaps I’ll suck an egg. Perhaps not. Today’s topic of discusson: What songs make you feel instantly romantic – in other words, what songs, the minute you hear them, put you in the mood to cuddle up to someone? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we?
