March 1, 2006:

THAT EXPLAINS THAT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, how about this little factoid: It is March. Why, it seems like only yesterday it was February. Of course, it WAS only yesterday that it was February, so that could explain that. That can always explain that very well, but why shouldn’t that be the case? That rarely explains this very well because this explains this very well, whereas when that explains this this comes off poorly. Conversely, when this explains that, that comes off very poorly. Hence that should always explain that and this should always explain this and then all is well with the world and environs. I do hope that everyone realizes that I have no clew as to what the HELL I’m talking about. Where was I? Oh, yes, it is March. We have begun a brand spanking new month and we must face it with heads held high and a positive outlook and also a positive outlook and heads held high. But, before we get to March, I had a very long last day of February, and it went something like this: I arose quite early, and then toddled off to the musical theater workshop (MTW), where we had the last of our group sing their songs (about five people). I gave some notes, they did the song again, and we had some discussion. I then went off to lunch with Miss Tammy Minoff and friend Lauren, after which I went to Vinnie’s to finish the mix and get him started on the mastering. After that, I headed over to the editing room, where we fixed what we needed to fix, after which I delivered the fix reel to the audio place where I’ll be doing the audio layback this morning. After that, I came home and had to deal with many telephonic calls and e-mails, after which I sat on my couch like so much fish and ate two broiled chicken breasts from Gelson’s.

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled Network. There isn’t much to say other than the transfer is much better than the previous DVD, the film remains the literate, funny, and very prescient film it always was, and the performances are brilliant all the way down the line. Oh, for actors like William Holden and Peter Finch – there like will not be seen again, mainly because no one writes for actors like those. And Faye Dunaway – how great she was, and what a cruel caricature of herself she’s become – she no longer resembles herself in any way, shape, or form. Robert Duvall, Ned Beatty, Beatrice Straight – they just don’t make ’em like that nowadays, I’m afraid.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because the first of March is upon us and there are things to do, places to go, and people to see, not necessarily in that order.

We’re in a mad rush to get the STAGE benefit CD pressed in time for the March 10th STAGE benefit, to be sold in the lobby. We are really up against it, frankly. Actually, my stuff is right on target and will go to the pressing plant today. But, they got the booklet info to my designer four days late, and that has really put horrible pressure on him – he just got the stuff last night, and is madly trying to get something for us to proof by morning, so we can make changes and get this thing to bed by tomorrow night. Even if all that happens, it’s still going to be down to the wire. For the rest of the STAGE releases, we’ll have plenty of time, so that’s good. When Vinnie called to tell me that he was finished with the mastering, he told me the shocking news that one of our favorite studios, O’Henry, had closed its doors a few months ago. O’Henry was such a high-end popular studio, that I just cannot understand what happened. Many TV shows record their scores there, and I used it many times – in fact, I was probably one of the three final dates before they closed, when I recorded the overture to The Drowsy Chaperone.

Today, I must do the audio layback for the Disney spots, and then hopefully deliver them by noon, after which I’ll deliver the STAGE benefit CD master. Then I’m hoping to come home and write for the entire afternoon, and I must plan Thursday’s musical theater workshop (MTW), too. I also have a bit of shipping to do.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, do all of the above, and I must also do errands, pick up packages, and attend to a variety and also a Hollywood reporter of things. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old thing you like, and we get to give any old answer we like, so let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely posts, shall we? And perhaps, if we’re lucky, that will explain that and this will explain this.
