THE MENTORING ME

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry, because today not only will she of the Evil Eye be here shortly, but shortly I must be at the Renaissance Hotel to do a one-on-one “mentoring” session. I have no idea what that means or exactly what I’m supposed to be saying to people, but I shall carry on and do my best. I know I’m speaking to musical theater writers and that I’m representing musical theater music on recordings, so I assume that’s what the questions will pertain to. Then again, I really don’t have a clew, so hopefully it will all become clear to me very soon. Speaking of clarity, yesterday I finally began to feel a bit better. The morning and afternoon was the usual congestion and cough-fest, but towards the late afternoon, the congestion began to abate and I felt less groggy and not quite so phlegm-ridden. I’d had a rather busy day, first going through the first act of the new play, smoothing things out, making additions, cutting some clunkers, and coming up with a new final beat for the end of the act. Then I had to watch the video of Deceit, which looks very good now, save for about six shots that we still have to do something about. After that, I had to do some errands, and then I finally sat down and began act two and got a little over two pages into it, so that felt good. I then decided to attend the little cocktail party they were having for us ASCAP panelists. It wasn’t all that crowded at the party, but I met a few nice folks, and the view from the 20th floor of the Panorama Suite is spectacular. I then came home and ate my one and only meal o’ the day – a cornucopia of stuff from Gelson’s Deli department. I was a very good boy and didn’t overeat or have any dessert. I tell you, soon I will be lithe and svelte with abs and buns of steel (the latter is now officially a line of dialogue in the new play). The one thing I have not done in the last six days is jog, because I just find it impossible if I’m not feeling well. After dinner, I sat on my couch like so much fish.

Last night, I watched the two-hour “special” of Alias. I was hoping that the four-month hiatus, and the fact that they’ve only got four more shows after the two-hour special, would somehow get the show back to its first-year roots, but that was not the case. In fact, it’s more maddening than ever, with the writers throwing in old characters and every hoary plot device known to man. Do they think we don’t remember the other episodes? And it’s so irritating to watch these characters feel one emotion one minute, then feel the opposite emotion one scene later (love vs. hate) – I mean, it’s contemptible. The “surprise” ending was not so surprising, not to anyone with a brain in their head. I guess I’ll watch to the bitter end, and at least Miss Garner has had her baby, and she can now actually play her character again. I also saw those TV previews they show, and when the thumping music and imperious narration came up for a show called American Inventor, I thought I was watching a Saturday Night Live spoof. How low have we sunk? American Inventor. Every time I think we’ve hit a new nadir, something comes along to sink us into the abyss even further.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below, because I must get my beauty sleep so that I can be coherent and illuminating during my mentoring sessions.

After the mentoring session, I shall immediately head over to the Burbank Hilton to meet up with our very own Mr. Nick Redman. We shall then attend the Ray Courts show, and I will, of course, take some photographs if at all possible, and I will also have a full report. I hope to see my pal Cindy Williams, and quite a few others that I know, and I’m hoping there will be some interesting dealers there.

After the Courts show, I hope to do some writing, and then I hope to settle down for a nice relaxing evening of DVD watching – unless, of course, something interesting comes up, like a partay or a dinner or some such exciting thing.

Now wait just a darned minute. I think we’d all better put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, I think we’d all better break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, I think we’d all better dance the Hora or the old-fashioned waltz, because today is the birthday of dear reader Sandra, lover of floop. So, let us give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to dear reader Sandra, lover of floop. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRHTDAY CHEER TO DEAR READER SANDRA, LOVER OF FLOOP!!!

And while we’re sending birthday wishes, a big haineshisway.com belated birthday cheer to our very own Mr. Nick Redman, whose birthday was last Monday.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, continue to get better, I must do all of the above, I must also pick up a package or three, and I must mentor to the best of my ability. Today’s topic of discussion: If you could have luncheon with any actor or actress working today, who would it be, where would you lunch, and what would you talk about? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I get in my mentoring mood.
