BUMP AND GRIND

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I’ve had two count them two restful days, and now it is back to the grind. I shall be doing the grind all the livelong day and evening, and perhaps if I am doing the grind I shall also do the bump. After all, what is a grind without a bump? Yes, Virginia, I shall be doing a bump and grind all the livelong day and evening and you can just call me Mazeppa or call me Madam, or call me Ishmael, or call me irresponsible, or call me, don’t be afraid you can call me. Well, we’re off to a fine start, are we not? I must say, I’d tell you all about my yesterday but I have very little memory of it. I can remember doing everything I needed to do prior to eleven o’clock. I can remember taking a jog. I can remember eating two count them two yummilicious Popeye’s chicken breasts, my only meal o’ the day. I can remember sitting on my couch like so much fish watching DVDs and falling asleep at least four times during the afternoon. I guess I was really overtired, for snoozing in the afternoon is very abnormal for the likes of me. I got five or six calls but I don’t really remember who they were from or what I said, because they all came whilst I was quite drowsy. And that was it. If that was it, was it that? Just asking.

Yesterday, I watched a few motion pictures on DVD in between snoozes. The first motion picture I watched on DVD was entitled Three Godfathers, a film of John Ford, starring Mr. John Wayne. I’ve always been fond of the film, and it was nice to see it again. I wish the transfer was better – it’s okay, acceptable, but lackluster and not all that much better than the transfer used for the laserdisc. Then I watched a motion picture entitled The Producers. Now, I hated every minute of the film the first time I saw it, but everyone on these theater boards said it plays wonderfully on DVD. It doesn’t. It’s bad. It’s really bad. It does have some deleted sequences, so it was nice to see The King of Broadway. I thought cutting it was a mistake the first time I saw the film – after seeing the number, I would have cut it, too. There are some outtakes, which are about as funny as a hernia. I then watched a motion picture entitled Modern Romance, a film starring Mr. Albert Brooks. I know his first two films have followings (Real Life being the first – and actually, given reality TV, it would be fun to see that again), but I’ve never been all that crazy about them. My favorite Albert Brooks film is Defending Your Life, a film where he finally finds a way to make his obnoxiousness actually charming and sweet. Modern Romance has some amusing things, but Mr. Brooks’ character is just so annoying that after a time the whole film becomes irksome. Good cast, though, and it moves right along.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below whilst we all go back to Ye Olde Bump and Grind. What’sa matter? Somethin’ wrong witcha bumpa?

Today is the final gathering of the musical theater workshop (MTW), and I’m looking forward to it. We’re going to have a postmortem about the show experience, and about the class in general, and then whomever wants to sing, can sing. After that, I must hie myself home to do a bunch of little errands, I must jog, then must hie myself to a celebrity-laden gathering celebrating my hairdresser Teddy’s old assistant’s coming out on the floor as a full-fledged hairdresser. That’s at six-thirty, but I can only stay about twenty-five minutes, for then I must hie myself back to the home environment for the seven-thirty reading of the play. After that, I’m hoping to grab a bite to eat somewhere decent.

Tomorrow I must begin working with Mr. Grant Geissman on this little Music Center gig I have. We’ve got to figure everything out, and then he has to put it together in the next five days, so we can deliver before he goes out of town. I’ve also got to meet with my designer so we can settle on the cover for the Deceit DVD.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, go back to both the grind and the bump, I must find someone to read stage directions at the reading (the person who agreed to now can’t – figures), and I must go hither and thither and perhaps even yon. Today’s topic of discussion: One of my favorite lyricists is Miss Carolyn Leigh, who wrote mostly with Cy Coleman, but also wrote with a few other interesting folks. What are your favorite Carolyn Leigh lyrics? If you aren’t sure, just google her – she’s written some amazing things. I’ll just say a few of mine: Witchcraft, Pass Me By, Hey, Look Me Over, You’ve Come Home, What Takes My Fancy. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and don’t forget to go back to the bump and grind or, at the very least, the old-fashioned waltz.
