OUT OF THE DOLDRUMS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, a new week has begun and I, for one, hope it has a little less drama than last week. Last week was a doozy, despite having had a wonderful reaction to the new play. The latter was the high point of an otherwise stressful and strange week that put in a foul mood and even a fowl mood. Yes, Virginia, when I was in the foul mood I desired chicken, and so I was also in a fowl mood. I’m hoping to resolve all that early this week so that one way or another I can get my mind back where it belongs, like Dolly Gallagher Levi. Speaking of Dolly Gallagher Levi, yesterday was a day in which I felt completely comatose. I had to get up early, leave the house until she of the Evil Eye went her merry way, and then I just sat here, feeling tired, so very tired. I did manage to watch two count them two DVDs, so that took my mind off things. And I did go out to LACC to see Moon Over Buffalo, so that took my mind off things.

Yesterday, as noted, I watched two count them two motion pictures on DVD. The first motion picture on DVD was entitled These Thousand Hills, a western, starring Don Murray, Lee Remick, Patricia Owens, and Richard Egan, directed by Mr. Richard Fleischer. Not a great movie, but it had its moments certainly and was certainly an enjoyable programmer. The scope transfer looks very sharp, with excellent color, and the film has a wonderful stereophonic score by Leigh Harline – also, Miss Remick has never looked more stunning. I then watched the second motion picture on DVD, which was entitled The Seven Ups, starring Mr. Roy Scheider, Mr. Tony Lo Bianco, and many others. It’s definitely in the Bullitt and The French Connection vein, and it’s directed in uninspired style by Phil D’Antoni. It has what was then the obligatory car chase, this one lasting fifteen minutes. But, I’m a fan of these gritty little US policiers, and this one moves right along.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I have to figure out what I should do today to get my brain out of the doldrums, or, at the very least, out of the doltrumpets.

Last night I attended the final performance of Moon Over Buffalo at LACC. I don’t think very much of the play, although it does have some solid laughs, but it’s farce elements always seem forced to me. However, with excellent players like Miss Carol Burnett, Philip Bosco, Randy Graff, and Andy Taylor, the laughs do come frequently and loudly. With students (both alums and current), it’s a tougher road to hoe. The whole thing seemed a bit slow to me, especially the pace of the second act, which was fifteen minutes longer than act one. Still, the kids did well, and it was nice to see them up there trying their best.

Today I don’t really have any plans, at least any plans I can remember. But I shall spend the day pondering what’s going to happen in the next couple of days. I shall also watch a DVD or three, I’ll probably jog, and I’ll probably eat something reasonable yet tasty. Yesterday, I didn’t have time to eat until after the show – I was starving, and had Subway, but too much of it. Still, a sandwich and a half as the only food I ate all day (plus I jogged), shouldn’t do me any harm.

The rest of the week should be fairly busy, what with doing the commentary track and then outputting the anamorphic version of Deceit, rehearsing for the musical, and maybe having another reading of the play with different actors (except for me). And I have an opening night on Wednesday at the Pasadena Playhouse.

Now wait just a darned minute – we’d all better put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, we’d all better break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, we’d all better dance the Hora or the Box Step, because today is the birthday of dear reader Danise. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to dear reader Danise. On the count of three: One, two, three: A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO DEAR READER DANISE!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, wrap my mind around certain inevitable concepts, I must bask in the glow of my muse Margaret’s glowing report on the new play, and I must just simply get out of the doldrums. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and we all get to post about them. So, let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I get out of the doldrums.
