June 23, 2006:

I DREAM OF JEANNIE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, what a little rollercoaster ride we had yesterday. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, what a little rollercoaster ride we had yesterday. It ran the gamut from a to at least m. I was up, I was down, I was up, I was down, I was even sideways at one point. The biggest part of the day was spent dealing with computer woes. Mr. Computer Man finally had to be summoned and he finally determined there was no way to fix whatever had become corrupted on Ye Olde Harde Drive. So, thankfully, everything had been backed up to my mini-hard drive, so he wiped the computer clean and reloaded everything. But because I hadn’t purchased the “pro” version of my backup system, the mini-hard drive wasn’t bootable. Not a problem except for the fact that it took three hours longer than it would have. Everything seems to be working okay except that I cannot eject the mini-hard drive at the moment because it says it’s “in use.” So, Mr. Computer Man has to tell me what to do to fix that and then all will be well. Frankly, all is getting a little tired of being well. Maybe, for a change of pace, well can be all. Where was I? Oh, yes, the rollercoaster ride. I also spent way too much time dealing with an errant and truant overnight package from amazon – we still can’t figure out where it is and I’ll be dealing with that again as soon as I arise this morning. I did find time to take a luncheon break. I also finally finished the song I’ve been slaving over for way too long, so that was nice. And then came the e-mail – a rather extraordinary e-mail from a person I haven’t heard from in close to forty years. Someone I dated when I was but a wee sprig of a twig of a tad of a lad of a teen. I wasn’t sure at first who it was until I realized that it could have only been one person. I wrote her back and told her to call me immediately. Well, it was exactly who I thought it was, and we had the most delicious conversation for quite some time. You see, the strange thing about this is that I have had a recurring dream for three decades about being at this person’s house, then leaving and not being able to find my way out of the neighborhood and then not being able to find the house again. Isn’t that the strangest thing? I’ve thought about this person over the years, and you all know how I am about trying to find people, but I didn’t have a last name so I never tried. And here’s the other odd thing – when I was writing Kritzer Time I had the character of a girl that Benjamin is sort of dating in high school. And I based the girl partly on dear reader Jane, and partly on this girl, and when I named her I used the girl’s first name. Well, we had the best time catching up, and I remembered things she didn’t and she remembered things I didn’t, and she remembered certain details that actually boggled my mind, like the last name of my first girlfriend, like meeting my parents, like remembering Walter Willison from our days at Bluth Brothers Theater (further irony – Walter had called literally ten minutes prior to her calling). She’s living in Virginia at the moment and she just seems bright and funny and her voice sounds like it used to, too. Perhaps she’ll register for our discussion board and say hello. I’m sending her the Kritzer books tomorrow, and she’s sending me some photos from back then (when she finds it, she apparently has one of us when I took her to her prom). Her name is Jean, although I know I called her Jeannie. The conversation made the annoyances of the day not important. And that was my rollercoaster day.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because frankly I’ve had enough rollercoaster for one day and evening.

Have I mentioned that yesterday was like a rollercoaster ride. And can we just say how in tarnation can it be Friday already. Holy moley on rye, it was just Monday, wasn’t it?

Today, Mr. Matthew Ashford is coming over and signing 100 inserts for the DVD of Deceit – I may or may not sign at the same time, although I should just get it over with. I also have to track down the UPS package that has gone awry, and I must also pick up a test DVD of Kevin Spirtas’ video to proof over the weekend. I’m lunching with Miss Penny Peyser – haven’t seen her in a ‘coon’s age, as the pundits say. I honestly cannot remember if I have plans tonight, so if I do I hope whomever the plans are with reminds me of what we’re doing.

I know I promised the return of the Unseemly Trivia Contest tomorrow, and it is my intention to do it, but if today is anything like yesterday, I may not be able to. We shall see.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, deal with UPS, sign DVDs, jog, lunch, proof, write, and a plethora of other things. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player, and your DVD/video player? I’ll start – CD, the soundtrack to Patton and Flight of the Phoenix. DVD, Early Summer, yet another film by Mr. Yasujiro Ozu. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we?
