R&R

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I’m ready for the weekend. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I, BK, am ready for the weekend. But is the weekend ready for me, that’s what I want to know? We shall see soon enough. But will soon enough see me, that’s what I want to know? In any case, I am ready for the weekend and I have very little planned, because I wish to rest and relax, as I’ve had a somewhat tumultuous week. Speaking of tumultuous, yesterday wasn’t. Yesterday, was, if fact, very pleasant and even illuminating. I awoke early, jogged early, then went down to Prospect Studios to be with Mr. Kevin Spirtas for his taping of Soap Talk. He did a fine job on the show, and sang If Ever I Would Leave You, and plugged his CD and upcoming DVD. After that, we drove to the Bur of Bank and we lunched at our beloved Marie Callendar’s. My favorite waitress, the delightful Bobbie, was there and she made sure we were at her station. I had a small salad and a bacon cheeseburger, but no fries or onion rings. Kevin had a bacon, lettuce, tomato and egg sandwich and pie. I filled him in on some of the travails I’ve been going through, and I must say he was very lucid about it and had very good suggestions, which, along with the fine suggestions received on this here site, I took. His were slightly different, but seemed very right. I then took him to the airport, and I finally got back to the home environment around three-thirty. I returned some telephonic calls, answered some e-mails, and then I was done for the day. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Last night, I managed to watch two count them two motion pictures on DVD. The first motion picture on DVD was entitled Down Argentine Way, and starred Miss Betty Grable, Mr. Don Ameche, and Miss Carmen Miranda as Miss Carmen Miranda. It’s really not a very good movie, but it did have its charms and pleasures – Miss Grable is easy on the eyes, and she’s fun to watch, Miss Miranda does her thing, which I happen to adore, and Mr. Ameche is always excellent. But, my favorite thing in the film was the turn by the more than amazing Nicholas Brothers. I had to watch their routine twice. The transfer is not quite up to Weekend In Havana, but it’s fine. I then watched the second motion picture on DVD, which was entitled The Omen – the new Special Edition DVD. Of course, there already was a Special Edition DVD, but this has a few more extras – not sure if the transfer is the same or not. The remake came out last week, and watching this marvelous film you just have to sit and scratch your head and wonder and marvel at the stupidity and greed and chutzpah to remake what is basically a perfect film that has not dated one iota. Of course, the original has real stars in it – Mr. Gregory Peck and Miss Lee Remick, whereas the remake has, well, I don’t know what you call Mr. Liev Schreiber but it certainly isn’t a star. In fact, I find him completely annoying. But, back to the original – a great script, great direction, great acting (by its stars and also Billie Whitelaw and David Warner), one of the great movie scores by Jerry Goldsmith, and even ten viewings later, it’s still chilling and I simply don’t tire of watching it. Listening to Mr. Goldsmith’s score is incredible – when movies still had real scores. Today it’s just thumping and droning, like a big orchestral pad that has nothing to do with anything. Mr. Goldsmith gets under the film and under the characters, and his music illuminates the film while still managing to sound like no other film score. Couldn’t happen today. The new version apparently opens with a montage of disasters and lets you know right away what you’re in for, instead of leading you in slowly but surely. And, of course, it has to have a death in the first five minutes. Oh, well – get the original and remember when movies were movies.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I’m quite ready to start my rest and relaxation (R&R, in Internet lingo).

Today, I shall be venturing to the Dale of Glen to visit Bookfellows, where I shall meet my DVD authoring fellow to pick up what we hope will be the final version of the Deceit DVD for me to proof. After that, I shall come home, eat, and then I’ll be going to Hollywood High School to see their production of, of all things, Tommy. When I was seeing Fuddy Meers at LACC, I was introduced to a young girl who is in the production. We had a nice chat (her mum, too) and she ended up sending me a note to the school inviting me to the show. I’m interested to see what a high school does with a show like Tommy, and I shall, of course, have a full report.

Have I mentioned that I shall be getting rest and relaxation (R&R, in Internet lingo) this weekend? Also, do not forget, tomorrow is our annual Tony Awards partay, and it is the place to be for all the merriment and mirth and laughter and legs. The East Coast will have to be careful not to give anything away for the West Coast, but we do get to have fashion reports, faux pas reports, and we shall laugh and laugh until we cannot laugh anymore, and then we shall laugh again. So, be there or be round.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, get some R&R, I must drive about in my motor car, I must eat something yummilicious, I must jog, and I must see Tommy. Today’s topic of discussion: Who are your picks for tomorrow night’s Tony Awards? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we?
