TONY TIME

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it’s Tony Time here at haineshisway.com. Not Tony Martin, mind you, or even Tony Newley or Tony Tanner or Tony Curtis, no, it is Tony Awards I’m talkin’ about. And there weill be no better place to spend your Tony Time than here at haineshisway.com. Has anyone noticed that I misspelled the word “will” as “weill”. What, do I have Threepenny Opera on my mind all of a sudden. If you were listening to a lot of Kurt Weill would you be Weilling away the hours? Just asking. In any case, our raucous and rowdy Tony partay will be quite the event it always is, so you won’t want to be anywhere else but on our discussion board for the merriment and mirth and laughter and legs. I, for one, am very excited that it’s Tony Time because that means I get to sit on my couch like so much fish and watch TV and eat all the livelong day and night. I may take an especially long jog just so I can eat more than I usually do these days. And I won’t eat anything too too fattening, like pizza or guacamole. I shall probably make my famous tuna pasta salad – it’s filling but light and it is also light but not filling. Speaking of light but not filling, yesterday was a very nice day. I just drove about in my motor car, not doing much of anything, and then I came home and had a yummilicious Wolfgang Puck Chicken Caesar Salad. I’d already jogged quite briskly in the morning, so I was quite hungry by the time I ate and also by the time I got to Phoenix. What am I, Jimmy Webb all of a sudden. First Weill, now Webb. I guess I’m only referencing “W” composers today. After that, I relaxed, watched a couple of DVDs, and then toddled off to Hollywood High School to see a production of Tommy, which, in keeping with our “W” composers, is by The Who.

I’d been invited to see Tommy by a very sweet young girl named Adriana Patti. I’d met her and her mother at LACC a couple of weeks ago, and she’d sent me a note. I arrived at the school at six-thirty, and went to pick up my ticket. I ran into Miss Adriana Patti immediately, which surprised me since I thought she was in the show. It turns out she was the head usher for the show and not in the show. In any case, we had a nice chat, and then they opened the doors to the theater and in we all went. I do believe that this is the first show I’ve ever seen at Hollywood High, despite having known well the man who taught drama there for many years, John Ingle. One is always a little worried about seeing high school productions, especially if you’ve been spoiled by the recent ones at Hamilton High. So, I was just hoping it wasn’t going to be a long evening. The house lights went down and the band began to play. The first thing I noticed was that the band was incredible. Then I looked closer and saw that it wasn’t students, but older people. In any case, the show began and I must say I was completely taken aback at how good a job everyone did. It was well-directed, well-choreographed, and the kids were committed and had really good voices. It was my first time seeing Tommy (how I missed it on Broadway, I’ll never know, since I worked with many people who were in it whilst they were doing the show) – it’s an odd little piece, but it moves right along and there’s just some genuinely pleasing music in the show. It ran a tight two hours and I was very impressed and very happy I saw it. I always find it touching when kids really commit to something and really have the talent to back it up. So, a big thanks to Adriana for taking the time to invite me (and, if she’s reading these here notes – I do hope she’ll continue on to our handy-dandy discussion board, register, and say hello to our merry troupe of hainsies/kimlets).

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below so we can continue to Weill away the notes.

Yesterday, I managed to watch two count them two motion pictures on DVD. The first motion picture on DVD was entitled Moon Over Miami, starring Miss Betty Grable. I must say, I’m finding these Grable movies a bit of a trial, as they’re all so formulaic and predictable. They do have their pleasures, though, and there are some nice musical numbers on view in Miami. The transfer isn’t as good as Down Argentine Way, which wasn’t as good as Weekend In Havana. I then watched the second DVD, a little history of Superman put out by Warners in anticipation of the new Superman movie. It’s produced by Bryan Singer and Kevin Burns and is pretty standard stuff, but I’m such a fan of Superman that I enjoyed it very much. I must say, the clips from the new film don’t look very good, but when they show clips from the first Chris Reeve/Richard Donner version, it makes you remember just how terrific that film was/is.

Today, of course, I will be preparing my tuna pasta salad, watching DVDs, and readying myself for our official haineshisway.com Tony Partay. I guarantee you a good time will be had by all. All always has a good time, wherever all is and our Tony Partay shall be no exception.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, make tuna pasta salad, I must work on a new song for PennyO’s show, I must begin entering changes into the script for the new musical, and I must get serious about proofing the short story collection, which we have to start designing this month. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s free-for-all day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the topics and well all get to post our pithy remarks about them. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we Weill away the hours until Tony Time.
