THE “G” WORD

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I have been googling and now I am late in starting to write these here notes. Googling can be addictive and last night I had a google on my back. I was searching this and I was searching that and before you know it time had gotten away from me like a gazelle beating a hasty retreat. Have you ever seen a gazelle beat a hasty retreat? It is truly frightening to see such violence done to a hasty retreat. What the HELL am I talking about? Speaking of HELL, it’s still pretty hot around these here parts, although I must say that last evening was finally cool, man, cool, and what a pleasure that was. Speaking of cool, yesterday went so fast that I don’t even remember what I did, when I did it, or anything else. Oh, I remember getting up after a decent night’s sleep. Oh, I remember jogging, although I got a rather late start – I think I was just getting telephonic call after telephonic call. Before I knew it it was 12:30 and then I had to do a bunch of errands. After that I wrote a few pages and had more telephonic calls. I got the news that it looks like Miss Heather MacRae will have decent-sized audiences this weekend (no one likes to book in advance in LA, but the orders really started coming in yesterday and we doubled what we had – hopefully, today and tomorrow will continue that pace, as it did with Miss Susan Egan). I spoke to Miss MacRae, who was rehearsing with her pianist, Mr. John Boswell, and she seemed very happy. I then had a meal with Miss Jessica Kiernan, a friend of Mr. Mark Bakalor and a nice gal who used to assist me on a few of our New York recordings. As we were about to leave the restaurant I ran into Miss Leslie Ackerman, who played Susie, the young ingĂ©nue in The First Nudie Musical. We had a nice chat, and then I finally returned home, where I sat on my couch like so much fish. I got a whole slew of telephonic calls all during the evening, most of which were from our publicist for the cabaret shows. And then, I googled. I couldn’t stop. I had to google. I needed it. I thought I’d kicked the habit, but I went off the wagon, man, and I googled, I googled, and it felt so good, it was such a high, man. Hello. My name is BK and I’m a googleholic.

Last night I did manage to watch one count them one motion picture on DVD entitled One Of Our Aircraft Is Missing, a film by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. It’s one of their war films, and it’s a fine one. The usual excellent performances, the usual excellent photography and editing (Ronald Neame and David Lean – can you believe it), but not one note of music, which I think was not such a good idea. Transfer on this Universal region 2 DVD was quite nice.

Okay, I’m trying – I’m trying not to google. I’m trying not to think about google. I’ve got to get this google off my back. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Google – sorry, button below? Perhaps a new section will get my mind off – off – you know.

Goooooooogle. Nope, the change of section didn’t work, damn it all. I dream of google with the light brown hair. No, that can’t be right. Maybe I’ll go listen to The Wayward Wind sung by Google Grant. No, that can’t be right. Oh, do you know who was in the Powell and Pressburger film? That wonderful British actress Google Withers. No, that can’t be right.

Today I must goog… I mean, today I shall be getting a haircut from Teddy. After that, I shall be going to LACC to do a little work on the lighting and sound. After that, I shall be coming home to write and other things. I may have a dinner engagement, I may not.

I could just google for a second. That’s all I need – a second. No! That’s never enough! Suddenly I’d be googling all summer long. Let’s google again like we did last summer.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, write, get a haircut, eat, visit LACC and g… g… I won’t, do you hear? I won’t. I will be strong, damn it all. Today’s topic of discussion: What is the most interesting thing you’ve ever found by googling? What is the most interesting thing you’ve ever found on the Internet? What is the worst experience you’ve ever had on the Internet? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we? And don’t worry – I’m not going to use the “G” word.
