I FEEL A SONG COMING ON

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I feel a song coming on. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, I feel a song coming on. Yesterday, for example, I felt a song coming on and so I sat down and by gum and by golly and buy bonds I’ll be hornswoggled if I didn’t actually write a new song. It was part of a day’s long push to finish The Brain From Planet X rewrite, which I did. I cleaned up the script, fixed spacings, inserted the new song (the second act’s only ballad, really – I think it came out well), read the lyric of the new song to David, who loved it, and then saved the whole thing as a PDF and sent it to the folks a LACC so they can print it out and distribute it, as well as extract sides for next week’s auditions. I must say, the last half of the year is shaping up to be very busy – in fact, I’d say I will not have a day off between now and the end of the year. I like busy, so it’s all fine. I mean, I have to finish writing this new play (I’m only a few pages in, because I’ve been trying to finish everything else that’s needed finishing, which I have), I’m working on co-creating and directing two one-person shows, and may start a third, although I’m really not certain about it. Luckily, all those are in the beginning stages and none will actually be on its feet until after the first of the New Year. Kritzerland has the new Sondheim CD coming out, plus at least two other releases before the end of the year. Of course, there’s The Brain, which will start rehearsals in late October for an early December opening. And now, September has turned into a totally crazy month and October is looking equally crazy.

Our very own FJL had called the other day to ask if I’d be interested in playing a role in the upcoming staged reading of The Last Starfighter in New York. Now, even though I did do Deceit for two weeks, that was the first time I’d done a play in twenty-one years. I did do a reading of a musical back in 1991 as a favor to Mr. Walter Willison – I played Pongo Pilkington in Wright and Forrest’s musical, Betting on Bertie. But, that was then and now is now. Normally, I would have said “no” instantly, but there were a few things at play – a) I really like Fred and Skip, who wrote the show, b) we put out the cast album, which I really like, and c) I’ve been trying to work out a New York trip for months. And so, I said if the director thought it was okay, then it was okay by me. Yesterday, I received word that the director was okay with it, and we worked out the details and I’ll be doing the reading (and singing). I’m looking forward to it, and I’ll start practicing right away. I’ll be in New York for a week – it will be grand seeing folks and catching up with friends. I’ll try to see Jersey Boys while I’m there, since I can get house seats easily. But, if that wasn’t fun enough, it also looks as if I’ll be going back to New York a mere three weeks later to do a recording, which I’m not free to talk about yet – still some details to be worked out and until it’s absolutely a done deal, I don’t like to talk about it – things sometimes do go awry. But, it looks pretty good, and I know it will make many people happy if it comes to fruition. Have you ever come to fruition? How did fruition feel about it? Fruition has always been a little distant with me, frankly. What the HELL am I talking about?

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because frankly I feel a song coming on and perhaps I’ll sing it in the next section.

Do you realize that the entire first section of the notes was all about ME? How unseemly. Do you know there’s a buffoon out there who does what he calls a “blog” – a blog very clearly influenced by this here site and its daily notes – and he did the same sort of “me” joke that I’ve been doing since the stone age? And then, said buffoon starts bragging that he’s written 270-something entries in his blog in a year. Well, sorry, buffoon, you’re so far back in the blog food chain it’s not even funny. Then he brags that he could take his entries and publish them in a book – they’re that good. Even I don’t have the unbridled ego to state such a thing. Of course, if we published all the notes in one volume, it would be massive – over 2000 pages, I’m sure. After all, we’ve been doing a daily notes since November of 2001 and have never missed a day, knock wood (I just knocked wood). How many daily entries is that, does anyone know? I don’t want to say with a certainty, but I’d be surprised if there has been another “blog” (I don’t like that word and don’t consider these here notes a blog) that has done a daily thing of this length for that long a period. In other words, why doesn’t some fine hainsie/kimlet nominate us for the Guiness Book of World Records? I think that would be splendidly splendid, don’t you? Alec Guiness has always been a favorite, and I’d love to be in his book of world records. There, have I out ME’d the buffoon? MEthinks I have. Damn them, damn them all to hell.

My goodness, that was a tangent, wasn’t it? A ME tangent. Or, to put it differently, a tangent about ME. I feel a song coming on and the song is about MR. Speaking of ME, today I must meet with the publicist for The Brain to discuss strategy. I must also do a plethora of other things. I have had a craving for macaroni and cheese, so I may try to have some today – perhaps I’ll meet the publicist at Hugo’s. Their mac and cheese is odd but good.

Now wait just a darned minute. Let’s all put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons. Let’s all break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks. Let’s all dance the Hora or the gavotte because today is our very own TCB’s birthday. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own TCB. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN TCB!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, write, meet, eat, greet, and drive about in my motor car doing errands. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers, shall we. And now – I feel a song coming on, so quick, someone get Dino at the piano.
