THE HOW-CAN-IT-BE-FRIDAY-WHEN-IT-REALLY-WAS-JUST-MONDAY GREENS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I’ve got those how-can-it-be-Friday-when-it-really-was-just-Monday blues. I don’t really have the blues, but I do have the greens with a tinge of the purples and pinks. When I have the greens with a tinge of the purples and pinks I always have the urge to visit West Hollywood. Well, the notes are off to a fine start, aren’t they? I feel the notes have gotten off to quite a gay start, which is appropriate because last evening I saw a gay play, or a play with gay themes like the Overture to Whoop-Up. I saw a play entitled Bluebonnet Court, which takes place in the 1940s and concerns a lady newspaper writer who has a car accident in the South and has to spend a few days at the titular location. It was, of course, a time of deep prejudice in the South, as well as a time that didn’t look favorably on matters gay. The leading character has been having a relationship with a Hollywood star, but it’s sort of gone south. She’s traveling to Los Angeles when she gets stranded. There she meets a Negro house girl and eventually romance ensues. There is also the husband of the woman who runs the jernt – he’s come back from the war, is an alcoholic, and has certain, well, how shall we say, latent tendencies toward members of his own sex. Some of the play was involving, and some wasn’t, but all the actors did very well and, of course, our very own Dale A. Cooke’s stage management was top notch. It was a bit weird seeing a show at the Hudson for the first time since What If played there two years ago (can you believe THAT?). Considering I loathe most waiver theater, this production was professional and well done, which is rare. It’s nice when something can be well done and rare at the same time, like meat.

Speaking of meat, yesterday I had a lovely meeting with Miss Joan Ryan and we’ve begun the preliminary work on a whole new two-act one-person show for her. We also set the date for the initial casting session for The Brain – August 31st. So, things are going to be busy again starting here, starting now.

Here is something I found out today: My high-speed Internet provider, Adelphia, is now Time Warner Cable. Every day things change – nothing is constant, everything is ever-shifting on the sands of life. My goodness, that was quite deep, wasn’t it. It was so deep that I feel I have fallen into an abyss of darkness in the middle of a black hole, and let me tell you, that’s dark, baby, that’s dark.

Since I no longer have a clew as to what the HELL I’m going on about, I suggest we all click on the Unseemly Button before it’s Saturday which, given how fast these days go by, could be any second now.

Have I mentioned that I’ve got those how-can-it-be-Friday-when-it-really-was-just-Monday greens with a tinge of purples and pinks? Speaking of greens – I should have worn green – I wore green the last time. What am I, Stephen Sondheim all of a sudden?

Today shall be quite a busy day. I must meet someone at the DGA in the morning, then I must hurry and be on my way to Mr. David Wechter’s home environment for a work session, then I must hurry home for a dinner at seven.

Now, here’s the deal. We have endless New York hainsies/kimlets gatherings – people fly in all the time to see shows and have get-togethers. So, I’m giving all hainsies/kimlets fair warning to start planning a big West Coast hainsies/kimlets gathering for the opening of The Brain From Planet X on December 8th (my birthday). I want as many of you out here as possible and will accept no excuses, especially from those who fly in to New York at the drop of a hat. We’ll be dropping a hat right here in Los Angeles, so start planning your flights and accommodations now. What fun we’ll all have.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, write, meet, eat, greet, perhaps pick up a package, and then have a fine meal at Genghis Cohen. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Friday – what is currently in your CD player and your DVD/video player? I’ll start: CD, Bill Conti’s soundtrack to John Cassavetes’ Gloria. DVD, Garden of Evil, starring Mr. Gary Cooper and Mr. Richard Widmark, along with Miss Susan Hayward. Your turn. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we.
