THE NON-STOP DAY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, today is a non-stop day. Yes, you heard it here, dear readers, today is a non-stop day. At no time will the day stop. The day will just keep going, like a gazelle in a G-string. Have you ever seen a gazelle in a G-string? It is frightening, but not as frightening as a gazelle in a Y-string. Actually, have you ever seen a gazelle? Speaking of a gazelle in a G-string, yesterday was a very interesting day. I don’t remember why, really, but it was very interesting, at least as I recall it. For example, I slept until nine, and then I got up and jogged. Then, Kevin’s rehearsal got changed to eleven, so I had to hurry and get ready for that. When I arrived at the rehearsal studio, there must have been about 100 young girl and boy dancers auditioning for the Reprise version of My One and Only (why Reprise is doing that show is anyone’s guess). I managed to wend my way through the crowd and get myself into our rehearsal room. The rehearsal went well – we cleaned up some stuff, added a couple of lines just for the LACC show, and basically just got the show back into Kevin’s body. After the rehearsal, I had to do some errands, then I had to lunch, then I had to begin writing a play (which I did), and then I had to sit on my couch like so much fish (which I did).

Last night, I watched a motion picture on DVD entitled Heart Like A Wheel. The film didn’t much interest me on its initial release, so I never saw it. Well, what a little gem it is. It doesn’t quite sustain itself for its 110 minute running time, but it’s heart is in the right place (a wheel) and the writing is good, the direction is straightforward and simple (one shivers to think what any of these so-called directors of today would do with this film), and the musical score by Laurence Rosenthal is superb (save for one terrible synthesizer cue, which I can’t believe Larry is responsible for – I’ll have to check the CD). But the film belongs to Miss Bonnie Bedilia, who is its heart and soul. She’s just wonderful – no grandstanding, you can hear her when she speaks, and she’s subtle and terrific. The Oscars overlooked her, and instead nominated three actresses playing basically the same role – Sally Field (the winner), Jessica Lange, and Sissy Spacek. I hate to say it, but Bonnie Bedilia in Heart Like A Wheel is better than any of them. No Oscar-bait performance hers – just honest and real and down-to-earth. Beau Bridges (who replaced Charles Haid, apparently fired for being difficult) is very good, as is Leo Rossi. The new special edition DVD from Anchor Bay looks swell.

What am I, Ebert and Roeper all of a sudden? Why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button because today will be a non-stop day and since the day will start soon I must prepare for to be on the go, go, go (that is three go’s).

Have I mentioned that today will be a non-stop day? For example, I have to get up quite early if I’m to jog before I leave for rehearsal with Miss Linda Purl at ten o’clock. I’ll spend two hours with her, and then I toddle off to LACC for a meeting with the set designer of The Brain From Planet X, which will be followed by a meeting with the tech crew of our cabaret series. After that, I must do a bunch of little errands, and then I must do a bit of writing. I shall then eat a reasonably reasonable meal, and then most likely watch a DVD.

This week’s cabaret shows are going to be a lot of fun. First off, both Kevin Spirtas and Jason Graae are completely sold out (we’ve added tables to accommodate the overflow), and I’m happy to say Miss Linda Purl is more than two-thirds full and will most likely be sold out by tomorrow. That’s a wonderful way to wrap the series, and I’ll have more to say about the entire experience in Sunday’s notes.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, rehearse, meet, eat, and whatnot. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like, and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, shall we, as we settle in for a non-stop day.
