BEATING A HASTY RETREAT

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, I must write these here notes in a hurry because she of the Evil Eye will be here all too soon and I must beat a hasty retreat, although what the hasty retreat ever did to deserve said beating is anyone’s guess. So, let me get right to yesterday or back to before or back to the future or yesterday once more. I got up fairly early (the phone rang once – don’t you love that), jogged fairly early, and then toddled off to a breakfast meeting with Miss Alet Taylor. We were there to discuss her one person show, but I asked her if she would like to be in The Brain From Planet X and I’m happy to say that the timing was right, the schedules worked and she’ll be joining Mr. Kevin Spirtas and some really talented LACC kids and we’re all very excited. That was a lovelier than lovely way to start a day. I then did a couple of important errands, then came home to find a wonderful blurb from novelist Dick Lochte (he’s been the only person to blurb all of my books) – the wonderful thing about Mr. Lochte is that he knows I wouldn’t want him to blurb unless he really liked the book. Here is his blurb:

“For these seven short stories, Kimmel employs the same intriguing mixture of nostalgic Southern California settings, wistful romance and show business allusions that have made his novels so sweetly and bittersweetly entertaining. This time, however, along with such down to earth subjects as inter-family relationships, suicidal depression and the romance of pornography, he adds a dollop and a half of fantasy. It’s doubtful that even two of his professed idols, John Collier and Ray Bradbury, could’ve come up with a more inventive concept than trapping a bickering, vacationing couple in an intergalactic musical comedy.”

Isn’t that a lovelier than lovely blurb? That, along with the wonderful Pogue blurb and the cool Grant Geissman blurb gives me three great blurbs for the back cover (see yesterday’s post to view the actual back cover). Needless to say, that was a lovely way to start the afternoon. Directly after that, the Simply Sondheim CDs simply arrived, a bit early, and I got them into the pre-addressed packages as quickly as possible, and then lugged to big bagfuls over to Ye Olde Post Office. That took over an hour, but ultimately over 100 packages went on their merrier than merry way. I’ve still got a couple of big boxes to ship – I just couldn’t lug them along with the two big bags, so those will go out this morning or Monday morning.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I have to beat a hasty retreat – I’ll be slapping a hasty retreat silly and I shall feel no remorse, oh, no, I shall feel no remorse.

Last night, I attended an opening night of a one-person play entitled Two Rooms In The Valley, an autobiographical show written by and starring Don Scribner, a very nice chap who part-times at my local DVD emporium. The play itself is a bit formless at this point in time, and it certainly needs some structural help, but Mr. Scribner is charming and acquits himself nicely.

I have discovered an interesting new website entitled yelp.com. It’s rather inane but I had some fun posting about certain stores and restaurants I like. Check it out – it’s certainly better than myspace.com.

This morning I’ll be going to Mr. Grant Geissman’s to meet Miss Cissy Wechter. She’s publishing a book and I recommended Mr. Geissman to design it, and he is. So, I’m helping out in whatever way I can. After that, Mr. Geissman and I will toddle over to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium for the book fair. And then I have a dinner to attend at cousin Dee Dee and Alan’s.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, beat a hasty retreat, jog, perhaps write, attend a book fair, and ship a couple of heavy boxes. Today’s topic of discussion: If you’ve had a very busy day, and you’re really all in, what is your favorite way to relax? Your favorite way to feel better, to soothe your aching muscles and mind? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I throttle a hasty retreat to within an inch of its life.
