September 25, 2006:

THE CITY THAT NEVER SLEEPS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here I am, writing live from New York, New York, direct from my room. I just walked home at 10:45 and the streets of Times Square were jammed with folks – it truly is the city that never sleeps. It seems to be very, very crowded here, which is why we couldn’t get my usual hotel – all rates are double what they normally are. I woke up at four-thirty in the morning, left at five, and was to the airport by five-thirty. I must say that getting through security was effortless and a breeze. I then spent an hour in the President’s Club, courtesy of FJL. The plane ride was just fine – I dozed off for a while, ate a square block of scrambled eggs and a cinnamon roll, and wrote two pages of play. We got in five minutes early. I called the car service and told them I was there and they gave me the number of the car and said it would be there in five minutes. Unfortunately, the terminal is very confusing and I simply followed the signs for ground transportation – but it was the wrong level, the level for departures, not arrivals. I wasted about five minutes before I realized what was happening. I got down to the correct level just as the car was arriving. There was a lot of traffic coming into the city – it took about fifty minutes, but it was a comfortable ride and my driver played Bollywood songs the entire time. The lobby of the hotel was very quaint and nice. When I got up to my room I opened the door and was greeted by a bed, one chair, and a table attached to the wall. That was it. One teeny-tiny closet and a bathroom completed the picture. I called the front desk thinking it was a mistake – I’d been booked in a double room. They informed me it was a double room – I’d hate to see what the single rooms are like. They ultimately moved me to another room that was a teeny-tiny bit bigger – bigger closet anyway. We’ll see how I do here – certainly it’s not a room designed for a claustrophobic. I then bought some toiletries (all the stuff I couldn’t bring on the plane, even though they didn’t check my bag) and then went off to FJL and Skip’s home environment. I was so pleased to see elmore and Jose there and we all had a grand time. Skip is an excellent cook – we had rosemary chicken, flank steak, tomatoes with vinaigrette, string bean – all very yummilicious. And, a three-berry pie with fresh whipped cream for dessert. We shot the breeze – what the breeze ever did to deserve being shot I’ll never know. But, we perpetrated a homicide on the breeze – all in all a grand time was had by all (yes, all had joined us). I then walked home and sat on my chair like so much fish.

I am very sore for some reason. My neck especially could use a good rubbing and yet there is currently no one to give it a good rubbing – we’ll try and remedy that situation soon.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get some sleep, as I’m very tired.

This morning I shall go buy a pair of running shoes for running, and then I shall do an extra long jog to make up for missing yesterday. After the jog, I shall shower and then be on my way for a little music rehearsal at Skip’s place – I’ll be meeting the director at that rehearsal. After that, I may have some time to kill, and then I’ll attend the first rehearsal for the show. I shall rustle up a dinner companion for dining at Joe Allen at nine, after rehearsal.

elmore and I will be getting together on Wednesday to discuss The Brain From Planet X – either before or after rehearsal. And dear reader Jose is trying to arrange a house seat for A Chorus Line on Friday night – that would be swell if it works out.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, buy running shoes after which I must run, I must have a music rehearsal and a real rehearsal and then I must have a dining adventure at Joe Allen. Today’s topic of discussion: New movie report – what new movies have you seen and liked, what new movies have you seen and loathed and what new movies are you looking forward to. Speaking of new movies, the one that everyone seems to like, The Illusionist, happens to be based on a short story by one of my favorite authors – Steven Millhauser, whose first book is quite brilliant – it’s called Edwin Mullhouse and it’s worth seeking out. It’s a great novel about childhood. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I try to get some needed sleep.
