FINE FETTLE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, she of the Evil Eye is coming to clean and yet I don’t have to worry about it, as she of the Evil Eye is in Los Angeles, California, USA, and I am in New York, New York, USA, hence someone else will be letting she of the Evil Eye into the home environment. I don’t really know what that has to do with the price of tomatoes or potatoes or sassafras, but I thought I’d mention it anyway, since I always need something to kick-start these here notes. I shall have to fly through these here notes, like a gazelle with a hangnail, because I must get plenty o’ sleep because I’ve got a long and involved day and evening ahead of me. Speaking of me, yesterday me had a very good time. I got plenty o’ sleep, got up, arranged for the purchase of a mini-hard drive, and then toddled off to Nola rehearsal studios to watch Miss Emily Skinner and Miss Alice Ripley rehearse tonight’s show. Alice, of course, I’ve recently seen in Los Angeles, but I hadn’t seen Emily since I saw her in The Full Monty, so it was really nice to hang with her again. First, they ran through most of the songs with the band – I made a couple of musical suggestions on the songs that were using my arrangements, otherwise I just sat like so much fish and enjoyed the music issuing forth out of their two beautiful mouths. Then there was a complete run-through of the show. The fellow who helped them stage it, Denis Jones, was there, and he’s very nice and very talented, and his staging of the numbers was/is lots of fun. The show is going to be grand and the girls sound wonderful. There are a few things from our albums, and also lots of new material. The band was very together and it was just a lovely way to spend five hours. I then came back to Ye Olde Hotel and did some stuff, and then I toddled off to join FJL, Skip, and elmore for a dinner at 44 & X.

What an exquisite little meal we had, although little doesn’t quite describe the copious amounts of food we all inhaled. The food was fantastic, the restaurant was lovely, albeit too loud. We had a grandly grand time, and everyone was in fine fettle. Yes, Virginia, everyone’s fettles were extremely fine. After we finished, I actually jogged back to the hotel, just to try to work off some of what I’d eaten and also because it was really, really chilly. I then sat in front of my handy-dandy laptop like so much fish, and answered several e-mails. All in all, a lovelier than lovely day.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button because soon I shall be on my way to Town Hall to set up for this evening’s recording.

I’m hoping that today goes smoothly, but I know that things will be a little tense because the theater has not exactly been cooperative (it’s gotten a bit better in the last couple of days, but I really don’t know what to expect), and we’ve got a lot of setup to do in a very short period of time. I do trust my engineer, Danny, and he knows what has to be done, and if I have to get annoying I certainly know how to do so. But, again, I’m hoping that everyone just helps out and that we can do what we’ve got to do so that we’re really ready to record the show. If there’s anything that’s really a problem, we can always stay at the end and do another two or three takes, but the girls are so together that we’re all just praying that things are just smooth as silk.

I may try to eat some breakfast this morning, or at least a snack of some sort, because I don’t think I’ll feel like shoving food down my throat an hour before the show, and after the show there’s a little party and then I’ve got to come back to Ye Olde Hotel, get packed, and get as much sleep as I can before being picked up to be taken to the Newark airport.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, setup for recording a show, do sound checks on said show whilst they are rehearsing, and then I must record said show, attend a party, and then get my beauty sleep and then return to Los Angeles, California, USA, bright and early tomorrow morning. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s bad casting day here at haineshisway.com. So, what are your most wrong casting choices for the haineshisway.com revival of – A Chorus Line. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I prepare to record.
