GREAT BALLS OF FIRE

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, all I can see is goodness gracious, great balls of fire. Yes, Virginia, that is all I can say because it is 1:30 in the morning and I’ve just arrived home and must write these here notes in a hurry and get to bed because she of the Evil Eye will be here at nine and I have a rehearsal at eleven and my mind is flummoxed beyond repair. Speaking of beyond repair, yesterday was so busy I didn’t even have time to think of the word flummoxed. For example, I got up at seven. I jogged at eight. I answered e-mails, shaved and showered at nine. I had a haircut at ten (with the always lovely Teddy, who did his usual grand job). At eleven-thirty I was at Vinnie’s finishing the mix of the Emily and Alice CD. We were able to fix the one thing I was worried about, so that was great. We got the CD down to eighty-four minutes, but I’m afraid if I try to shorted it by another five minutes that we’ll lose the sense of things (I’m not cutting any songs, so the time would have to come from the patter, and you’d be surprised how hard it is to abbreviate the patter without losing the spirit of it). I’ll be listening to it over the next two days and taking notes to see if I can possibly pull out the time – if not, it’s going to be two CDs at our usual special two CD price. I’ll know for sure by Monday. At three I was at LACC for rehearsal. I ran the ensemble numbers for the beginning and end of act one, and I must say the kids have done their homework, and actually pretty much nailed their harmony parts – I was very pleased, and I feel we’re now on our way to getting them stronger and stronger. I then blocked a big act two sequence (but not its musical number, which is the sole number being done by the tap choreographer), and I blocked an act one ensemble number as well. We’re really ahead of the game by a day or two, which is really nice. And we have four weeks until we open, which is also nice. I then ran the two act one musical numbers involving The Brain and the aliens – really looking good. It was a nice, full rehearsal. At eight, I attended the opening night of Intimate Apparel. I’m not sure what I think of the play, but everyone did a nice job, and the tune I wrote for some lyrics in the play got a huge applause (I actually added three lines of lyrics to the end of the song that got its biggest laughs). It’s the first time in ages that I’ve seen the Camino Theater pretty full on an opening night. Afterwards, there was a reception, and I chatted with several people – but, I hadn’t eaten all day, so dear reader and assistant Adriana and I went to Jerry’s Deli for some dinner. At one-thirty I was home, flummoxed and overtired. As I said, goodness gracious, great balls of fire.

Have you ever had great balls of fire? Just asking. Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I must get as much beauty sleep as possible before she of the Evil Eye arrives.

Today, after leaving the home environment, I must pick up some hair products from Teddy (they were arriving yesterday afternoon), then must toddle off to a nice long rehearsal. We’ve got a lot to block tomorrow – I’m beginning the epic twelve-page scene that ends Act Two, plus blocking some transitional scenes. We’ll also be reviewing things, too.

After rehearsal, my intention is to get something to eat, and then come home and sit on my couch like so much fish and do nothing but watch motion pictures on DVD. And Sunday it is my intention to do the same all the livelong day and night.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, rehearse, eat, and watch motion pictures on DVD. Today’s topic of discussion: Spuds. What are your favorite potato dishes, and feel free to include recipes. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst we ponder our great balls of fire.
