HEAVENS TO BETSY

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, it was a whirlwind day yesterday and I’m home late and the notes are supposed to be up by now and here I am just starting them and heavens to Betsy but I’m going to have to write like the wind. Have you ever written like the wind? Frankly, I don’t know how the wind writes, having never read any of the wind’s books. And might I ask what in tarnation heavens to Betsy means? Might I just ask what heavens to Betsy has to do with the price of watermelon? Why isn’t it heavens to Joanna or heavens to Gertrude? Why Betsy? Where was I? Oh, yes, heavens to Betsy I’m going to have to write like the wind, hence the notes will be wind-like. Speaking of wind-like, yesterday was a whirlwind day. For example, I woke up, jogged, and then had to attend to many errands and whatnot. That took a few hours and then it was time to toddle off to LACC and the first of our two run-throughs. The first disturbing thing I found was the reservation list – none of our visiting hainsies/kimlets are on it, and I know that I’ve been told that those reservations have been made. Only Michael Shayne’s name appears on the list. So, please let me know if you did indeed make reservations, especially if they were guaranteed and/or paid for with a credit card – our box office lady has been out of town on an emergency and I think she never turned over her list to the fellow who was dealing with it after she left. Then we had our first run-through. As I feared it would be, it was a bit sloppy after our four-day layoff. Not terrible, but just people not concentrating or forgetting simple things. Still, some very amusing things happened, which I always like. We took a dinner break, and I did an interview with the LACC newspaper. After that, we convened for our evening run-through. I had to get very stern a couple of times, because people are still fumfering lines and breaking character when doing so, and I’m finding it fairly inexcusable at this point. So, I keep coming at everyone strongly about playing the show, concentrating and having focus, and being in the play at all times. I will say that the second act perked up considerably, so that was good. After rehearsal, I grabbed a bite to eat, then finally came home and began these here notes. And that was my whirlwind day, that and having to respond to the twenty-seven e-mails that were waiting for me.

Well, heavens to Betsy why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I am writing these here notes like the wind and we all know the wind would be clicking on the Unseemly Button right about now.

I think I’ll watch a couple of Edward R. Murrow interviews this evening before toddling off to the bedroom environment. They’re on a newly released DVD with seven hours worth of Murrow interviews.

Today, I must buy close to two hundred envelopes for shipping the Alice and Emily CD, which is on track. I shall then start the arduous task of addressing them. Then it’s rehearsal and run-through. The afternoon will be used for running scenes and cleaning up blocking. Yesterday, I fixed the beginning of one scene and that improved it greatly, and I also did some additional blocking work on Alet’s number, as there were a few moves that weren’t working for me – those are now working like dynamite – in fact, one of the fixes got an uproarious laugh, so we know that one is working. Then, in the evening, we’ll do our full run-through with everyone except Lauren. On Wednesday, I have a three-hour session of paper tech with our lighting designer. Thursday, our sound designer is loading in and then it’s a dry tech on Friday and our full tech on Saturday and possibly Sunday. On Thursday morning we’re having what we hope will be our final callbacks for the kids show. And also on Friday I’ll be doing the Skip E. Lowe show.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, address packages, pick up packages, rehearse, have a run-through and find time to eat some foodstuffs. Today’s topic of discussion: Hats. Hats aren’t exactly happening right now, but if you could bring back the hat trend, what are your favorites, which would you wear, and what were your favorite hats in the days when you didn’t have to ask “Does anyone still wear a hat?” Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and let us ponder who fershluganah Betsy is and what meaning heaven has to her.
