December 2, 2006:

DOES ANYONE STILL EAT A MALOMAR?

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, can you believe it’s already December 2? Why, it seems like December 1st was only yesterday, doesn’t it? Of course, December 1st WAS only yesterday so that could be why. In any case, December is speeding along like a gazelle eating a Malomar. Does anyone still eat a Malomar? Where was I? Oh, yes, it’s already December 2nd. And that means that this very day The Brain From Planet X has what I hope will be its first and final tech day – I’m praying we can get through both acts and then take Sunday off and have a complete tech run on Monday evening, in advance of our first dress rehearsal on Tuesday evening. Speaking of Tuesday evening, yesterday was a long and not that productive day (for the reasons why, see last night’s posts). I pretty much wasted two hours sitting around because things weren’t ready, when I could have been home addressing packages. That is how the day began. Well, first I got up, as it’s hard to address packages whilst ensconced in one’s bed. I addressed fifty packages, then had to go out and ship a few things that had been building up. I also had to pick up mail and do a few other things before toddling off to LACC, where I sat like so much fish for almost the entire afternoon (I let the musical director and my assistant run the rehearsal). We then did a run-through, but were missing one of our lead actresses, which makes things very difficult, especially for Kevin. After tonight, we have our full cast for every rehearsal, so that will be nice. The run-through was not as spontaneous or fun as the previous night’s – fairly low energy from certain cast members. I was feeling very out of it most of the day, because my lack of sleep is really catching up to me and I have to be very careful or I’ll get sick. Hence, I’m writing and posting these here notes early. After rehearsal, I grabbed a bite to eat, then came home and sat in front of my laptop like so much fish.

I have to be out of the house early today – not only do I have a band rehearsal to attend to, but she of the Evil Eye is arriving bright and early. But, I do have some exciting news, but why should I tell it to you in this section? I think I’ll tell it to you in the next section. So, let us all click on the Unseemly Button below because I know you are now drooling in anticipation of said exciting news. But, just eat a Malomar and calm down.

And now, without further ado, some exciting news. The Alice and Emily CDs arrived, four days early. So, we’re going to work very hard to try and get them all packaged up this weekend and shipped on Monday and Tuesday. Isn’t that exciting? Isn’t that just too too?

Today, of course, is our first band rehearsal, and I’m looking forward to seeing dear reader elmore and hearing his brand spanking new charts, sans bass, since the bass player is flying in from San Francisco and won’t be with us until Monday’s band rehearsal. Our musical director has been playing off elmore’s piano/conductor charts and I can already tell that I will love certain things a lot. There are also a couple of things we’ll probably adjust as we go, but that’s the nature of the beast or, at the very least, the beast of the nature. After that, we begin our tech rehearsal at 12:15. I was already told that we were sliding to 12:30 and I was adamant that that not be the case – once you start sliding, you continue sliding and it all becomes hellish. A schedule is a schedule is a schedule.

So, I’m gone from eight-thirty to eleven, so be sure to keep the home fries burning, you dear, dear people out there in the dark.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, not jog (no time), not do errands (no time), not pick up packages (no time), and not sit on my couch like so much fish (no time). What I shall do is listen to the band and do a tech rehearsal. Today’s topic of discussion: What are your favorite film and stage performances by Julie Andrews, Judy Holliday, and Ethel Merman? Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, whilst I gird my loins for a long, long day and evening. Perhaps a Malomar or two.
