December 13, 2006:

THE WANING DAYS OF DECEMBER

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, tonight we resume performances of The Brain From Planet X. I will admit to suffering withdrawal symptoms for the last couple of days. I’ve grown very fond of The Brain, the production, and especially the company of players. I’m hoping our houses are nice and full for the remainder of the run – certainly Friday and Saturday are filling up quite nicely. It’s hard to believe that the month is almost half gone and that in just a couple of weeks we’ll be ushering in a brand spanking New Year. I know I say this every year, but where in tarnation did this year go? This year went by faster than any other in my memory. This year just sped by like a gazelle in a Porsche. Once our show closes, I’m going to try and stretch out the waning days of December to their fullest. The waning days of December – that was so poetic, wasn’t it? Of course, the sun is out every day, so it hasn’t been waning at all. We all know that when it wanes it pours. Speaking of waning, yesterday was a day. It began with me waking up at five in the morning. I refused to get out of bed and I guess I managed to fall asleep again, and then the next thing I knew it was ten-thirty. I had to rush and catch up with my day, and then at two I toddled off to LACC for a pick-up rehearsal. With two of the leads gone, we only did a cue to cue, mostly for the tech people. I did run a few of the numbers, just to get everyone back in show mode. After that, I had to hie myself back to the City of Studio to judge the final night of the talent contest at Vitello’s.

At six-thirty, we all gathered at Vitello’s. My fellow judges Ronn Goswick and David Galligan were back with me, and we had two new judges – an agent and wonderful gal named Victoria Morris (we totally hit it off and had a great time), and a guy agent (I think he was an agent – maybe he was in casting). They began late, and we listened to the seventeen singers, one after another. I thought some of the song choices peculiar and tried not to let it influence my scores. We dispensed with making comments to keep the thing moving along. Our ballots (along with the patrons’ ballots and all the ballots from the previous weeks) were then tallied and five finalists were announced. I batted 100% on the finalists – picked every one of them. Then the five finalists each sang one more song. The song choices were a bit better – for me, it was clear who should win, and I’m happy to say that my choice was, in fact, the first place winner. She got a $1,000 check and will be doing a couple of evenings at Sterling’s at Vitello’s in March. I’m not sure I’m spelling her name correctly, but it’s something like Merissa Haddad. It was a very long evening, and I was hoping to go out to dinner, but no one was available and I ended up with McDonald’s again, which got me to my McDonald’s tolerance level – I can’t go back there for at least three months. I then came home and sat on my couch like so much filet o’ fish.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because the waning days of December are waning and we must not be caught unawares, oh, no, we must not be caught unawares.

This morning I shall package up a few more orders and if I have time I’ll try to ship them out – otherwise it will be tomorrow morning. Then at two-thirty I have to introduce the opening number from The Brain for the LACC Board of Trustees. After that, we have a few hours to kill which I shall kill eating some decent food at some decent restaurant. Then we do our seven-fifteen performance, and then I may have a dessert after the show, depending on if I know anyone attending the show.

Has anyone noticed that the days of December are waning? There’s really no way to stop it, not even saying wane wane go away come again some other day. Then again, the wane in Spain stays mainly on the plane. Yes, here’s that waney day. I must stop now before I make myself vomit on the ground.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, do a few errands, present the opening number of The Brain, and then attend our evening performance of The Brain. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you get to ask me or any dear reader any old question you like and we get to give any old answer we like. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers whilst the waning days of December continue to wane.
