DOES ANYONE STILL EAT A BLINTZ?

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, here we are on the final day of January. In but a moment February will be upon us and, because February is a short month, March will then be upon us. And so time flies by like a gazelle eating a blintz. Does anyone still eat a blintz? I think blintzes have fallen out of favor, Jew-wise. I just don’t recall seeing anyone eat a blintz in the last decade. I say bring back the blintz. Let’s have a blintz blitz. I, myself, never at a blintz, not until I was a teenager. I think I had a blintz with jelly on it – I think I liked it okay, but I really have no clear memory of the blintz or what it tasted like. Well, since this here site is always on the cutting edge of what’s happening, we will single handedly bring back the fershluganah blintz. Speaking of the errant and truant blintz, yesterday was a gloomy-looking and occasionally rainy but fine day. For example, I got up. That was fine. I then did the usual morning things, wrote, and went to pick up an overdue package that still wasn’t there. And then I found out it had been delivered to the post office (déjà vu – same story as the lost package of two weeks ago), with delivery confirmation. My mail place doesn’t have it – and it seems completely clear that the post office has now misplaced or lost two packages in two weeks. I finally got the number of the post office involved and spoke to someone, but the lady who specifically handles that zip code was gone – I’ll be speaking to her first thing in the morning. I’m expecting more delivery confirmation packages and I want to make sure she knows that her job is about to turn very, very unpleasant. I will become her worst nightmare. That will happen anyway unless she finds this latest missing package, because it contains a CD purchased via eBay – one of a kind. The seller feels that the package has been delivered and that that’s where their responsibility ends. I will, of course, file a complaint with paypal if necessary, to recover my dough. Not much dough, but I’m not going to be out dough and CD. They can take it up with the post office, because I really can’t, not being the shipper. I spent the afternoon writing, making final fixes on the Creature CD, and then I toddled off to the Disney/ASCAP workshop.

Last night, I did the panel for the Disney/ASCAP workshop. Like the last time I did it, it was for the short form – we saw the first twenty-five minutes of two different musicals. I was actually pretty focused last night, especially about the first show, which I was able to be quite lucid about. My fellow panelist was the composer of The Color Purple. He was very nervous about doing the panel, but he did just fine and had very good and interesting things to say. I’d say that he and I and Mr. Schwartz were in agreement about both shows – very much on the same page. It was nice to see Stephen again (I gave him a copy of Skinner/Ripley, as he has a song on it), and I saw many folks I know and like, including Fred Willard, Adryan Russ, Lissa Levin, Doug Haverty, Michael Kerker, director Paris Barclay, and several others. Also in attendance was the original Audrey of Little Shop, Miss Ellen Greene. My favorite part of the evening was meeting Miss Eva Marie Saint, who was as beautiful as ever, and who was kind enough to say some very sweet things about my comments. All in all, I had a really nice time.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below whilst we all think about how best we can restore the blintz to its rightful place on the food throne.

Today I will be writing, then lunching with Miss Yvette Lawrence, a singer I’m very fond of (she’s on the Broadway Christmas CD) – she’s putting together an act and our mutual friend Heather MacRae suggested she call me to pick my brain. So, I told her to pick away. After that, I shall write some more, deal with the post office, and then perhaps sup with a friend, although the latter is very tentative.

Perhaps I’ll have a blintz this morning, since I’ll be meeting Miss Lawrence at Jerry’s Deli. Yes, perhaps a blintz. To blintz or not to blintz, that is the question. The rest of this week is filled with various and sundried things to do – such as seeing a double bill of Experiment in Terror and Mr. Cory, both early films of Blake Edwards, seeing two programs of one-acts on Friday (matinee and evening), and maybe even working with Miss Joan Ryan on Friday morning. The weekend is fairly free at this point, and on Sunday I’ll be supping with our very own MusicGuy.

Now wait just a darned minute. Perhaps we’d better put on our pointy party hats and our colored tights and pantaloons, perhaps we’d better break out the cheese slices and the ham chunks, perhaps we’d better dance the Hora or the Texas Two-Step, because today is the birthday of our very own Michael Shayne. So, let’s give a big haineshisway.com birthday cheer to our very own Michael Shayne. On the count of three: One, two, three – A BIG HAINESHISWAY.COM BIRTHDAY CHEER TO OUR VERY OWN MICHAEL SHAYNE!!!

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog (if possible), write, lunch, write, deal with the postal office, write, and then maybe have a dinner. And try to watch a DVD. Today’s topic of discussion: It’s Ask BK Day, the day in which you dear readers get to make with the questions and we get to answer them. So, let’s have loads of lovely questions and loads of lovely answers and loads of lovely postings, as we bring back the blintz and welcome in the lovelier than lovely month of February.
