AND A BOX OF SCORPIDOS

Bruce Kimmel Photograph bk's notes

Well, dear readers, you may be wondering what the title of today’s notes means – certainly I am wondering what the title of today’s notes means. “And a Box of Scorpidos.” I don’t even have a clew, do you? What in tarnation is a Scorpido? A scorpion in Speedos? So you might ask how the title of today’s notes came to be. Yes, you might ask that, but I shan’t tell you until the very end of the notes – it will be a surprise ending, like an Agatha Christie mystery. Speaking of an Agatha Christie mystery, yesterday was quite a nice day here in the City of Studio. The weather was stunningly stunning, hence I had a nice jog for the first time in a week. I got the DVD closet cleaned and organized and it’s much better than it was. I had a nice meeting, and we’ll see what materializes, if anything. It’s not something I’d expend any energy thinking about, certainly. Que Sera Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be). After that, I did some more things around the home environment, then toddled off to sup with our very own MusicGuy. What a lovely evening it was – the food was stupendous (salad, steak, asparagus in hollandaise, corn pudding, and instead of a box of Scorpidos for dessert, we split a crème Brule. The conversation was sparkling, and we laughed and laughed and just when we thought we could laugh no more, we laughed again. After dinner, I waddled back to my car and came back to the home environment, where I immediately sat on my couch like so much fish.

Yesterday was one of those days (and partial evenings) when I kept flitting from DVD to DVD – I just couldn’t connect with anything so, in the end, I just shut everything off. For example, I watched about twenty minutes of Home From The Hill, but the transfer was very dark and I got irritated. I watched about twenty minutes of Flags Of Our Fathers, but the film irritated me almost from the first frame – so, I shut it off. I then watched about thirty minutes of Don’t Knock The Rock, another rock-and-roll movie with a flimsy, annoying plot, but good music. I then watched about half of the documentary that comes with the latest Film Noir box set. It’s the usual crappy Warner Home Video documentary – peopled with a handful of interesting people, but, more often than not, peopled with pedantic twits who would bore the pants off a gazelle. Is there anyone more pretentious and pedantic than Dr. Drew Casper – who is this guy? And that voice. You just want to throw your shoe at the TV. And he’s just the tip of the iceberg. Are these “documentary” filmmakers (and I use that word ever so lightly) so bankrupt that they cannot think of doing these with some new people or, better yet, without them at all? You learn nothing, they are a bore-fest, and, in the end, I turned it off, too. Oh, and the wall-to-wall inappropriate music (sounded like Hans Zimmer on a bad day, which, of course, is an oxymoron) – well, it’s my fault for even putting the stupid program in the player. So, I didn’t really watch a motion picture on DVD, but I will tonight – perhaps one of the noir films in the box.

Well, why don’t we all click on the Unseemly Button below because I know you’re all dying to know why the notes are titled “And a Box of Scorpidos.”

Today, I have many errands to do in the morning, and then I’ll be working with Miss Joan Ryan and our musical director, the great John Boswell. We’ll play through songs, start to think about arrangements, and take a real hard look at the songs we’ve chosen so far. I’ve got a major piece of special material to write – I’ve done a bit of it already (setting new parody lyrics to a lot of the A Chorus Line songs), but I’ve got to finish the rest. After our work session, I’ll have more errands, and then the rest o’ the day and evening is mine all mine. I have dinners tomorrow and Wednesday, and much writing to do.

So, why are the notes entitled “And a Box of Scorpidos?” Well, I’ll tell you why, for it would be unseemly of me to withhold such things from the likes of you dear readers. Last night I received an e-mail from dear reader Laura promising to send me a package of homemade fudge if I titled the notes “And a Box of Scorpidos.” Apparently, it’s some joke to do with dear reader Sandra. Now, I don’t want anyone to think that I’m a prostitute for fudge, but let’s face it, I’m a prostitute for fudge, especially dear reader Laura’s fudge. I’ll let you dear readers come up with your very own meaning for the title of today’s notes and you can post said meaning right here at haineshisway.com.

Well, dear readers, I must take the day, I must do the things I do, I must, for example, jog, write, do many errands, work with Miss Joan Ryan, do more errands, and then sit on my couch like so much fish. Today’s topic of discussion: Since we posted about Dominico Mudugno’s song Volare in yesterday’s posts, what are your favorite foreign-language songs? And you may included songs that started life in another country and ended up a hit here with American lyrics. Let’s have loads of lovely postings, shall we, and don’t do anything to upset your Scorpidos.
